New Win 7 Key

Thread Starter
Long story short, my douchebag boss gave me a pirated version of Windows 7 and told me it was legit, and it seemed like it was until now. I was aware that there was a new Windows security update recently that sought out all of the pirated copies of W7 and deactivated them, so I installed it thinking that my copy was legit. Now, Windows is telling me that my copy is "not genuine". I have a 100% legit version in a box sitting on my desk, but would prefer not to reinstall Windows as I do not have enough storage space at the moment to back up all of my data. Here is what I am wondering:

1) I know a lot of these pirated copies of Windows can be modified heavily, so will my legit key still work on the version installed on my system? Do I even want to risk keeping the possibly modified version?

2) How would I go about entering my legit key and activating Windows after it has already been installed on my system for several months?

Right click on computer > go to properties > at the bottom of the screen you will see something that says change product key. Put your key in there.

If you feel that there may be somethign wrong with the install use your legit copy to do an "upgrade" install. It will just install windows again and leave your programs and files intact. This will take much longer than putting a new key in though.

So even if the copy I have installed is modified, an upgrade install from my legit disk will work? I'm just super paranoid right now because I have almost 2tb of data I can't afford to backup at the moment, and I absolutely cannot lose it.

Well i haven't done it from an illegal copy.. I understand your concern. I would just try to activate by typing in the new key

If you just put in your genuine key I think it will fix your problem.

But, if you can't risk losing the data now here is what I suggest.
Follow this guide to fix your current situation. You will have to uninstall the update, reboot, download the program they list but don't host and then hide the update so that you don't accidentally update to it again.
Since you own a legit key you shouldn't fell any guilt about doing this method until you can back up your data and do a clean install with a genuine copy of windows.

Or you could try a system restore to before you updated.

If you have any questions pm me.

Alright, well I used my 100% legit key and it is still telling me that my copy of windows is not genuine. This is pissing me off. Does anybody have any other suggestions that don't require a complete reinstall of Windows? Or maybe someone can donate 2tb worth of hard drives so I can back my stuff up ...

Just a thought here and it will require a reinstall ,but you won't need to back up either. Make a new partition and install your legit copy of windows -get it activated -delete old windows and or the partition it is on. will that work for you?

Try activation via the phone man, I have had activation problems in the last week with genuine Windows Server 2008 and 7 but worked fine when I called up with 7.

Also if you did a reinstall it should create an Old Windows folder.
