Replacing a P4 1.8ghz Willie

Thread Starter
Im looking to replace my P4 1.8ghz willie processor, mainly because it can't keep up with me in CSS, it bottlenecks my system so bad that I get the same frame rate @ 640x480 Minimum Gfx, as I do @ 1600x1200 Max gfx. I want to find a cheap solution to a better CPU, so that I can get the maximim potential out of my system, If someone could point in a good direction to go for a cheap solution for a better CPU I would really appriciate it.

System Specs as of now...

P4 1.8ghz
1 GB DDR266 RAM
Sapphire Tech. RADEON x800gt VC (OC to 573core/579memory, Stock 475/490)
80GB HD
Sony P4B266-LM Mobo (OEM so Loced BIOS)

For Counterstrike: Source your CPU is holding your system back. For other applications there may be no bottleneck as they do not require a lot of processing power, so a bottleneck does not happen all the time.
However I would expect the frame rate to vary a lot on your system via different settings.
Your CPU and memory seems to be the limiting factors, the memory due to the fact that PC2100 is very slow, thus data transfer is limited. The CPU's FSB speed, cache and clock speed combined is rather slow but would still hold out in CS:S fine, with your system I would expect the high settings to work well if very little AF/AA is applied.

If you are certain on a CPU upgrade I would recommend a 478 Prescott of 3GHz or higher. Or a 775 one if you can find a AGP compatiable board.

Note: Motherboard upgrade will be required

Very cheap and can overclock to at least 3ghz.

If you're budget get an athlon 64 3000+ otherwise get a 3800+ as more and more games are coming out that can take advantage of duel core. You will also have to get a new motherboard and you should get new ram too. If you go with the 3000+ it shouldn't come to more than about $250.

I'm guessing taht is a 478 socket processor. Your best bet is to upgrade you motherboard and your processor... But then, you will have to get DDR2 which could make the venture rather expensive.

Here is my recommendations:

ASUS P5WD2 $165

Intel P4 630 3.0Ghz 2MB L2, 800Mhz FSB $180

OCZ Gold Series 1GB (2 x 512MB) 3-3-3-8 $86

Are there any options w/ AMD that could possibly b cheaper?

I'm sure there are, but I didn't show you the cheapest stuff either. You can get cheaper intel stuff.
