More RAM

Thread Starter
Well, my friend is giving me a free computer; or I might have to pay around $200 for it. But anyways, it has 1 GB of ram; not sure what type yet, but I know it's 2x512... Can I buy two 1 gig sticks of ram, and use 3 gigs of ram, or do i have to have it at an even number, and just get another 2x512?

It depends on your motherboard. Find the brand of the motherboard then look it up online, it has a max RAM limit. 1 gig should be fine for gaming or apps. benchmarks show only like a .2 fps increase in 2 gig vs 1 gig.

wait till you get the computer so you know what mobo it is. And yeah, Windows can use 3gb of RAM (xp that is) if you have media center 2005 or xp 64 bit then you can have more.

ya 1 gig will suffice for now, so i would just wait till you get the board and can tell what the max is and if you even really need the extra ram, thats pretty sweet your gettin a new comp for free or even 200$.. good luck with it
