The best gaming headset for the Xbox 360?

Thread Starter
I am considering buying a gaming headset to use with my Xbox 360. I already own a pair of Turtle Beach x1's but I hear some of the better headsets make a difference. The three headsets I've been looking at are the...

Turtle Beach x31

Tritton AX Pro or Ax 720

Astro A40

I have read in reviews that the Turtle Beach and Tritton cords that connect to your controller give some popping and crackling when you put them in and sometimes when you jiggle the cord accidentally. I have experienced some of this with my x1's but I really do not mind it.

Some questions that you guys could answer from personal experience for me would be..

Does the x31's battery life live up to the 25 hours it says it gives? I don't feel like replacing the battery every week so do rechargeable batteries work well with it?

I have read the Tritton's have worse directional sound output than the x31's.
Is this true?

And my final question is are the Astros really worth shelling out 200 dollars?
I mean its quite steep for a gaming headset. Are they really that amazing?

Post any other pros or cons that you have to offer to help me out with my decision
I know this article is an eyeful but thanks for the consideration

Get a nice pair of audiophile headphones (ex: ATH AD700/A700, Sennheiser HD555's) a clip on mic, and pair them with the Astro Mixamp imo.

Turtle Beach x41s. I have a pair and they were worth every penny. In my last game of MW2 they saved my ass from somebody trying to sneak up on me. I heard him coming up some stairs and was able to catch him before he knew i was even there.

Pros:
Absurdly comfortable
Directional sound (you can tell with some accuracy where people are.)
Actual wireless (the older ones had to be in LOS of the base)
Ability to mute chat but not the game. ( really useful when you have chatty team members)
Can be used on PC( need an xbox controller hooked up to the pc to use the mic though)

The so-so
Battery life not a big deal if you pick up some rechargeable AAAs. If you don't you might want to buy them in bulk.
Takes some getting used to. Took me a little bit to be able to determine where people were from the sound.

The bad:
Popping like you mentioned but not a lot. Normally only if I go on the other side of a wall or out of range. Some phones my mess with it too.
There is a slight whine if you turn the voice chat volume up high. I only really notice this when there is nothing else making noise.

hope that helps

I have the x31's and I had the same question, and in fact I made a thread about this well. To answer your question, I personally think the battery life on the headset is okay. Its not great, especially during the summer time when I didnt have school and Winter Break when I played a lot the batteries would last about a week with decent game play time. If I gamed hardcore it may last 4 days? but as of now I have school, and I play maybe an hour or two during the week, and say 5 hours on the weekends. With this amount of game play time, the batteries last about 2-3weeks. To be honest, I havent even tried rechargeable batteries, mainly because it costs like almost $30-$40 for some AAA rechargeables, ontop of that you have to wait like 12 hours to recharge, its cheaper to just stock up on regular enegizers for like $3, and simply use new ones. but im probably going to buy rechargeables later on during the summer.

The X41 is the best headset for home use. It has the best sound, hands down (and I have tried many headsets). Before I get yelled at, I am talking about GAMING HEADPHONES, not audiophile headphones. The Turtle Beach's features such as chat boost and mic monitoring add even more value that Tritton does not have. As for any echo/popping, you just need to contact support@turtlebeach.com and they send new cables free of charge that take care of any issue. Also, I grabbed a pair of rechargeables off ebay for about $10 and just swap them out once a week.

Have a tad of bias, was sponsored while back. Astro is like a dream. Would of been worth every penny moving up from X4s

Have the Astro A40s my self with the 2010 MixAmp. Best phones that I've owned without going into the Audiophile level which can get pricy really quick. Best all around for my gaming needs, PC and 360. Always found Turtle Beachs to be cheap feeling and Tritton to be over priced for what little you get. But that's my opinion.
