I want to replace Pentium D 945 for e4600, but why is Intel so expensive?

Sorry for my vague title. Basically, I have this Shuttle machine, which has a Professional Audio Recording Sound Card for recording audio professionally, but I am thinking that this silent pc makes some noise, mainly because my processor is very power hungry and people kept telling me that Pentium D's are very inefficient and Core 2 Duos are better. I have a Q6600 on my main system and its really nice, just like my Pentium 4 3.00 GHz back in 2005. Anyways, getting back to my pentium d system, since I use this for silent performances, I want a processor to be less power hungry so that the performance and noise lowers down.

So I was looking at my e7400 processor in my other P5Q-E Machine and was thinking I could just put that in my quiet machine, but yet, the stupid chipset is an i945G chipset and doesn't support the e7400! Now, I was looking at my system specs and the E4600 Dual Core processor (which is less better than the E6600, a processor half as good as my Q6600) would fit my Shuttle, but when I looked it up on the internet, Its a Hundered Dollars! I think thats ridiclous since its a 0.35 quad core speed and most AMD dual cores are half that price. Why is Intel being so expensive?

I apologize for my rant.

So basically, my question is this. Where can I trade in my Pentium D 945 CPU with a E4600 and get a 50 percent discount or something when making the purchase? I am currently testing Windows 7 on this machine, its not bad except I know its a crap machine since the Pentium D bogs the system performance down. My main q6600 system is currently running Windows XP Professional, which is really ironic.

Thanks for taking the time to read this essay.

I would look on eBay for that chip. Buying one new at this point is a waste of money. Here is one for $32.

lostsoul, thank you for the link, but I will consider buying it later since I may not have much money yet. I will keep checking on ebay though.

PS: How much can I sell off my Pentium D for?

Just a quick scan of eBay shows them being bid around $40-$50 which is pretty good. Looks like you might be able to break even or even gain a little. That model Pentium D must be fairly sought after to still be worth $50.

edit: I see why now. It is the one under the fastest. You have a 3.4GHz and the fastest is 3.6GHz, before you get into the extreme editions.
