Best TV for $700-800

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

After realizing how terrible my original post was, I wanted to rewrite my post & do this properly. I'm pretty unfamiliar with televisions as a whole but do notice the big differences (HDTV vs. TV) and such. I've been reading up on what types of TV's exist & their pros and cons. Plasma's are out the door due to the power used (three times more than LCD) and the risk, regardless of how small, that video games can ruin them. I don't really know much about LED's, but their price is supposedly much, much higher than LCD's. Thus, I assume the best route would be for an LCD HDTV. I am familiar with all the big brands (Sony, Sharp, Philips, Vizion, etc.) and should probably take a live look at the varying TV's at a local retailer.

We currently have a 32" generic TV that we're looking to replace (almost 10 years old). It's the standard "big box" TV & has no special features or input jacks for some of the stuff we plan to use. So, first & foremost, the TV must be able to use our PC's because we hold lots of movies on our hard drives. That's a very big part of the equation. Secondly, I'd love for a 1080p type television due to the increased resolution. 1080p doesn't play a big role in small TV's (from what I've heard), so I'd go for a medium-sized one (42"-47"). We also play Xbox 360 & we're probably going to get a Blu-Ray DVD Drive down the road. Basically, it needs to be the best TV in it's price category that meets all the above requests.

If anyone has any recommendations, I'd love to hear them! I'll also be handing out +1 reps to anyone who gives out good advice & information for my families selection.

EDIT: The TV needs to come from a store where monthly installments can be paid for. We can't purchase the TV outright.

What we're currently looking at: 40" Bravia EX400 Series

According to the reviews I'm reading, it's really a high-quality TV and seems to meet all required qualifications.

Either way I'd get one from Tiger Direct with 15% Bing cashback. Search "motherboard" If you can afford to wait the 60 days for the cashback, you could get a $900 plus TV for $800.

I picked this up back in august and absolutely love it.
42" LG $700 - 15% Bing = $595

or there's a 47" $800 - 15% Bing = $680

Hi Jocelyn,

Thank you so much for the recommendations!

I did forget to mention that the TV needs to be paid for in monthly installments, not outright. We're trying to buy a 2nd car @ the same time.

EEK you might wind up paying double that way! Sorry, I'm only 25, but I've had delayed gratification beaten into my head by my rents lol.

Back to the TV's, I'm pretty sure Tiger has a payment thing as an option, and I'm almost 100% sure it can be combined with Bing.
BillMeLater I think.

Crap! The Dell probably kills with the interest. OK, I'll work on seeing if I can manage to open up the funds to buy it outright. I actually talked to my mom about that yesterday, but she said "it can be bought later, when more money is saved up". The positive is I got $300+ dollar paycheck coming in the next week or two (+1) & I have enough money to buy the TV without feeling a "huge" debt. The problem is, I set a goal to have in my bank account & dropping below that line would kinda make me sad.

Oh well, I'll have to continue looking @ TV's and hopefully take a look @ your recommendations closely.

I should mention that reading a review on the 42" you posted, someone stated USB files can't be viewed? That only USB port is for is service...?

I highly recommend that LG model, I have the same one except i spent about 150 dollars more for the 120Hz model. Big mistake. I NEVER use it. Aside from the fact that I hate the interpolation feature that I paid MORE the set itself has got a great picture. Check out the link in my sig to see if you might be interested in a 120Hz model or not.

I highly recommend the LG model Jocelyn linked. I have the same one except I have the 120hz model. In my mind that was a big mistake, I hate the 120Hz feature as it's not TRUE 120hz and very misleading. I turn the feature off 90% of the time the set is in use, although some people like it. It's kind of buggy and doesn't work with all sources. When I turn the feature off I love the set. Great picture for the price. Check out my post in my sig about the differences between 60 and 120hz sets!

Edit: ARGH sorry for the double post!

Two things
1. I've actually read there's a hack to do that lol
2. I don't thing that was ever something I cared about with an LCD TV, not to mention my sig rig is hooked up to it, so I can USB photos that way. No offense, but when I've seen that feature on LCD TV's, I used to think "Who would use that?" hehe.
