Sempron? Budget AMD CPU with scaled down cache (AMD's equivalent of Celeron)

Goto www.newegg.com or some other retailer and see what the latest speeds are. And raw mhz doesn't equate to power, Intel runs higher mhz but not as many ops per cycle.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Intel max speeds are 3.80 GHz (models P4 670 and p4 571) where as AMD max speeds are 2.80 GHz (model Athlon 64 FX-57).

Of course, AMD's speed of 2.80 is according to AMD standards and I think it should be equivalent to something like 4.2 GHz if you want to compare it to Intel's way of determining cpu speeds.

The latest speed for a sempron is 2.0 GHz (again according to AMD's standards). If you compare it to an Intel cpu it should correspond to a speed of 3.4 GHz.

Semprons are for AMD what Celerons are for Intel. They both correspond to low-end market entries (for example less L2 cache, lower external clock speed, etc...) for users who don't require great computing power and they are offered at affordable prices.

Quote:
Celeron D is a “light” version of Pentium 4, and Sempron is a “cut” version of Athlon XP or Athlon 64.
For more info on Semprons and Celerons read here

That overclocked Venice core you got should be equivalent to a P4 running at 4.0 Ghz (as your uncle said). At leat that's what I would say.

The Centrino is better than the P4 for a laptop. It has a lighter weight, longer battery and certainly generates less heat.
But I don't think a 1.66 GHz centrino will match the power of a 4.0 GHz P4. It would be more like a 2.6 or 2.8 GHz P4.

However there's more to a processor than just its speed. Granted, Pentium M processors run at a slower clock cycle than a P4 but they are designed to do more in each clock cycle making them faster.

Not sure you can compare a Centrino to a Venice. You should compare it to an AMD Turion (check this link http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/artic...122255,00.asp).

Oh and one last thing (quoted from http://searchmobilecomputing.techtar...7152,00.html):
Quote:
The Centrino is a package not a cpu and it consists of:
- The Pentium M processor.
- The 855 chipset Family.
- The PRO/Wireless network connection.

In addition to a 400 MHz system bus and a 1 MB L2 cache, the M processor has the ability to use only the voltage that applications demand. The 855 Chipset supports up to 2 GB of double data rate (DDR) memory and USB 2.0 for faster data transfer. The PR/Wireless connection supports Wi-Fi (802.11b) and power functions designed to maximize battery life.
