RAM- Smartest Upgrade?

Thread Starter
So, due to a shifty AGP/PCI lock on my board, 270~275 is about the best fsb I can do. I'd upgrade, but I don't have the cash or need to move to PCI-e right now. It will happen this summer but not now. With 270 fsb, I run my ram on a divider, so it clocks in at 220 at 2.5-3-2-8. Since upgrading the board is out and a CPU upgrade is over my budget, does a RAM upgrade seem like the best choice?

Can anyone recomend a 2x512 set of DDR 500 that will clock up to about 270? My budget is around 150.

Thanks alot guys.

RAM usually is the worst performance vs. price item you can buy.

If on a budget, it should be treated as icing on the cake.

well both of these will get you where u want to be (and more) as they both use samsung TCCD ICs... they'll get you to about DDR600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231035
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146890

typical TCCD performance is DDR400 @ 2-2-2-5
DDR500 @ 2.5-3-3-7
DDR600 @ 2.5-4-4-8

while not all TCCD will do this, some will do better it all depends. But you also don't need more than 2.9v to achieve this. And this RAM will follow your upgrade this summer.

Both of those are ddr400 sticks. Why not get DDR533 or so since I'm overclocking anyway and its about the same price?

If your priority is gaming, you might be better off saving that up for a really nice pci-e graphics card to go with your new mb, or if you are already getting one, upgrading to a faster processor that won't bottleneck your gpu.

Well gaming is not my priority. I'm a console gamer. My video card doesn't really concern me. I just want faster multitasking performance.

the gskill memory above will clock too ddr 600 with looser timings... and i bet it can and will go even further than that... its great memory and your best off going with the gskill.... it will last you for future upgrades as well...

What kind of performance increase will I see running ram at 270 rather than 220? Would I be better off with a CPU with a higher multiplier, like a 3700 SD or an Opteron 148? I don't wanna wait and save up more, cause that's not fun, but if its truly a better choice I will.

i would suggest a 4000+ SD, once ur at it, cause theres not much price diff. from a 3700.

I actually have both sets of gskills at my house right now (The ZX and the HZ)
and I'm find that unless you can get this higher mhz ram past 275mhz its a wash.

My ZX stuff at 225mhz with 2.5-3-2-5 timings is performing in games better then this HZ stock and slightly above stock around 260-265.

I think I've pretty much figured out I'm at a limit with my motherboard and I wasn't able to get the HZ stuff past the 270 range.

They both scored around 6500-6600 mb/s range in sandra which is pretty interesting.
One had higher mhz but looser timings, the other had lower mhz but tighter timings.

I'm sending the HZ stuff back cause I'm actually liking my game performance better with the tighter timing ram(ZX).

YMMV and keep in mind this is gaming. I didn't notice a difference in multitasking in windows between them.
