Summary:

Quote:
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday turned down a request to review a major patent infringement ruling against the maker of the BlackBerry e-mail device.

The high court rejected a petition by Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM.TO: Quote, Profile, Research)(RIMM.O: Quote, Profile, Research) to review a federal appeals court ruling that could lead to a shutdown of most U.S. BlackBerry sales and service.

Basically, a patent holding company (basically a company that just holds patents and licenses them, but does not actuall make anything itself) has sued RIM saying that they have violated a patent.
They were in negotiations for years, but it fell apart.
RIM was hoping that it could attack the patent process itself, but the Supreme Court just said no.

So basically, unless RIM and the other company can come to terms (basically, RIM has to cut a big check) it is entirely possible that the patent company will get a decease and desist order on RIM...

The Supreme Court are ***holes, they're not helping out RIM cuz an American company is doing the suing. Why would you protect a Canadian company's interests when there there's an American one that wants to sue them. Jerks, then again, one of the biggest users of the blackberries is the US federal government so we'll see. I'm sure the other PDA/Phone companies are in on this too, Blackberries dominate the Trios and whatnot.
