help review my budget gaming rig

Thread Starter
So I am hopefully going to build myself a new rig in the next week or two. This is what I have so far:

What do you all think of it?
Hard drive space is not an issue as I have a 1TB and a 120GB external. I know that I should get a better PSU but I am on a budget here and I just want something to get me up and running. I will probably get everything from www.pccasegear.com unless someone can point me to a better price from an Australian site.

I like the board , i have the same one it is solid. If you can try to get phenom 555 it is a c3 revision and clocks a bit better , also i would not touch that PSU with a ten foot pole, check out 400 watt corsair or antec's earthwatt line .And make sure the 5770 is reference design ,linking the card should help , cant really see on the pic . Reference design cards clock better , since they can be soft modded for higher vcore .

Fun fact: A 500W PSU from a non reputable brand may not be as good as a 400W PSU from a more recognized brand.

Might I recommend the CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W. It's a great PSU, and should handle your rig very nicely.

As for the main rig, I think you've done your research.

What OS are you planning to use though? 32bit or 64bit? Since you are only buying 2GB of RAM as of now, getting a 32bit OS would make future upgrades to your RAM rather redundant.

I would caution against the apevia power supply. I had the only one I ever bought die in 2 days, very disappointed. Pretty capable rig for the money, great job!

good parts...

i'd try and get a single 2gb DIMM if possible, so you don't have to have like 6 gigs of ram later when you get more ram...

-As mentioned the PSU may be a firecracker; the corsair 450 is a great suggestion.
-If OCing you will need a 3rd party cooler. It may be better to get a mobo with heatsinks on the VRMs if you are too. My board which is similar is not bad. The NB runs a bit hot but it has not let me down so far.
-The MOBO comes uin two flavours 1.0 and 1.1; may be worth checking if you are going to miss anything if you don't get the 1.1.

-Happy with the case? I am not familar with Gigabyte's reputation as a case maker not sure what you have available at that budget; we don't get many GB cases over here. Would you also need more fans?
-Samsung spinpoint F3 instead of the WD?
-Where are you buying from? The 555/720 may be about the same price.

A list of random suggestions!

To be completely honest I am one of those who always tell people to get a corsair PSU (my last rig ran off a tx650) so I understand all of you who are recommending the corsairs. I was just thinking that I would buy this apevia for now and grab a corsair when I had more money, but the Corsair 400W is only $20 more than the 500W apevia so I think I will just grab that and save myself the stress.

@ iceblade I appreciate the suggestion at getting a single 2gb stick, makes way more sense than a 2x1 kit.

EDIT: Just realized I had already chosen a 1x2gb kit!

I am not really concerned about the case ATM, I will be happy with anything that has decent airflow.

Also I have a bit of experience with overclocking AMD chips so my next purchase will probably be an aftermarket cooler. I am thinking a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 would do me nicely.

Thanks for the reassurance in the rest of the parts I chose. Hopefully I can have it all here be friday.

Of course any other suggestions are welcome!

Look into the antec earthwatt series or possibly one of the thermaltake pure power psu's.

Yeah, the two things I would change is the ram and the psu. For ram, I'd say get this pair of 4gb(you will be glad you got the extra 2 gigs). Also, I'd go with a corsair psu like others have said. I'd say this 550w is a sound choice. Good luck with your budget build

EDIT: Also, thermaltake psu's are junk. Antec's are okay though. But corsair is pretty reliable.
