New build -which processor and motherboard?

Thread Starter
i thinking of setting up a new rig,

i had my eye on the opteron 170 but it seems that it is impossible for me to get it anywhere near me. so i am looking at my alternative 4400+ dual core. it seems like they are almost identical xcept for the core frequncy being only 200mhz difference.

Do youthink there is much difference between the two? is the 4400 easily overclockable? like the opteron 170?

or shoudl i keep on trying to find the opteron?

Also what motherboards do you reckon i should get?
any suggestions?

thanks

can you find a 165? I've heard good things about overclocking them... also the 3800's are oc'ing nicely, but the downside is they only have half the cache of the cpus you were looking at.

if you want to oc then you'll probably want to look at a DFI board. I just ordered a DFI expert board it's supposed to be one of the best overclocking boards you can get.

supposedly the dfi mobo comes with TONS of OCing options... so i would suggest that one, but asus makes good boards to for OCing... either will suffice but i believe the dfi is best

i think you should stick with the 4400... but i have no clue how well they OC... some else will have to answer that question for u ...sry

The 4400 is a sweet proc, but I'm a little skeptical about its ocing ability. What type of cooling are you going to use? I have crappy water cooling and I can barely get it stable at 2.6-2.7. But once I get the OCZ phase change I'm hoping to hit at least 3.0

I find ASUS offers an excellent BIOS support for the overclocker...The A8N32 SLI Deluxe is an awesome board with lots of expandability--the 170 looks good--but I have no experience OCing it. I was looking hard at both of those for a superquiet rig.

ther are other options but the i would recomend asus because ive never had a problem with them and i like my premium board that i have now (ofcourse i had to mod it a bit )

there are also the msi diamond that has the dual x16sli and its allmost as expensive ($200) its just like usuall when something new comes out it s going to be expensive ( i remember paying $420 for my 6800gt256mb agp card when it first hit the streets ) but anyways out of the x16sli the a8nsli32 is prob the best because of its other features but is the performacne gain worth the exra money ...

i like my opti 170 and it performs well 2.8 with water- its harder to get a dual core to oc as high as the single core guys, a 165 should oc as high as the 170 can more then likely jsut get some good ram or bear in mind youll be running a divider
