Wireless router

Thread Starter
I have a Dlink DIR 655 wireless router ,and I am wondering if I should leave it on all the time or trun it off? To turn it off I have to unplug it from the back. There is no power button. It is connected to my computer and my laptop and then my cable modem. Or should I leave it plugged in and just hit the power button on my modem? I want to do what is best for the components, and I don't want to risk anything overheating and such. Thanks for any replies to my questions. Also, I hope this is in the right section.

I concur with the other guys, my DSL modem always on (5+years) and routers are on likewise. If security is an issue use WEP to secure.

WEP is crackable in under 5 mins with downloadable tools. WEP is known not to be secure.

WPA is a much better choice. While still crackable, it is much more difficult. If you can (and your adapters support it), go WPA2 which is even better.

I am currently using WPA2. If I leave it all pluged into my surge protector and just turn off the cable modem at night do you think that would be my best choice? If I turn the modem off that keeps the wireless from working when I am away, but I don't have to un plug the router everytime. Does this sound like my best option?

Just unplug/power-off the power strip/surge protector and call it a day.

Why do you feel you need to turn it off?

As said, the equipment is designed to run 24/7. Only time I unplug my network devices is if I am doing maintanance or having an issue.
If your worried about wireless, if your router supports DD-WRT or Tomato, load that and then you can schedule wireless hours (set it to turn off at night). But with WPA2, your pretty secure.

I just dont want it to get too hot or short out and burn my house down lol. I'm not worried about someone leeching my wireless. Do they get too hot or anything? If I have it plugged into a surge protector I wouldn't think I would have to worry about storms and such.
