Introduction
ATI has just released the new Radeon HD 5830. This card is placed between the 5770 and the 5850 in terms of performance. ATI has deemed this card as more of a 58XX card hence it's name. The card is slightly larger than its successor, the 5850, and it draws slightly more power. This is due to the reason it runs off a higher core and memory speed to comendate for having a lower number of SP's, or Stream Processors.
Technical Specs
825Mhz Core Speed
1080Mhz Memory Speed
1120 SP's
1x DVI
1x HDMI
1x Display Port
Max Resolution of 2560x1600
ATI Crossfire Ready
DirectX 11 Capable
EyeFinity Support
This card has been taking a lot of heat lately regarding its high cost, higher power draw, and size.
I will be putting it up against a GTX 280 to see a comparison to a card that it is supposed to perform around the speeds of.
Enjoy.

Comparison Conclusion
Performance wise yes, I would place the 5830 at the 4890 levels, however, I do not expect it to stay there. The drivers I am using are some modified 10.2 BETA's that ATI has on their site. They are pretty terrible. With future driver support I expect this card to be able to slide on right behind the 5850 in terms of performance.

Overclocking
At the moment, the card does not have any sort of software voltage control.
The overclocks I used for testing are all on stock volts.

Final Thoughts
ATI is a few steps ahead of Nvidia right now, and they know that. ATI has it's full spread of DX11 card out and cards like the 5830 are just filling gaps. The very balsy retail price for this card is sitting in the mid $200's which in all fairness, is too high. That being said, this card is a great performer. Overclocking

Final Thoughts
As of right now there is no software voltage control which I hope will get fixed with new driver updates, bios updates, or just supportive software. So I am open to just about anything to get the voltage control working, because as shown above, this card shows a great performance increase off of a fairly minor overclock.
At stock I would place this card between the 5770 and 5850 leaning slightly towards the 5850 side of things. That stock voltage overclock placed it right at the 5850 performance level. Keep in mind the drivers on this thing are very new. Since it uses a lot of the same features as the other 58XX series cards, I do not expect too big of a performance increase, but I do expect an increase.
As for the power consumption and size, if you own a 5850 you are going to overclock it, if you aren't then skip this paragraph. I suspect that if you were to raise the 5850 core speed to match the 5830's speeds, they would draw similar power. Maybe even the 5850 drawing more power since the excess of SP's. The power consumption should not be the deciding factor when purchasing this card. It does not play a big enough role in the card's production value to really have any affect on the card's credibility. In 2D clocks, the idle power draw is tiny, just like the rest of the 5 series cards. While in 3D mode, even while overclocked the power draw is very small considering the generation before it. The size of the card is the only thing that could potentially be an issue. The size limits the consumers that can purchase this. It is the size of a 5870 which means that a good sized Mid-Tower or a Full-Tower is required to have enough room to fit it which needs to be checked before purchase.
Overall I think this card is a very good contender with the potential to be the best bang/buck card on the market, but right now, with the current drivers and prices, I am sad to say that it isn't. If this card hit the $220 and below range, it is the perfect card for a mid-budget gamer.
Key Points of this summary
Performs around GTX 280 level (4890)
Overclocks to 5850 (more potential with voltage control)
Length of a 5870
Slightly more power draw than a 5850
Maturing drivers are always good to look forward too
Needs to be about $200-$220
I hope you found this helpful.
