Thread Starter
IM building a new gaming rig , and im either buying a Opteron 146 "2.0"
or a amd64 3700 , I herd good things about Opteron that it can be overclocked to Fx speeds easly , What do you guys think ?

well both the opty and the 3700+sd will OC quite nicely. several of the newer 3700+SD's have reached 3Ghz on air, but then again the optys have been doing the same.

the opty is made from better silicon and undergoes more rigorous testing... so theoretically it should have more headroom when overclocking, this is not always the case though.

the 3700+ has an 11 multi while the 146 has a 10x. you'll want to think about what htt your mobo and your RAM can handle when deciding which cpu to get. to get to 3Ghz w/ a 10x multi you'll need a htt of 300Mhz while if you have an 11x multi you'll only need about 275 which is much more attainable for most mobos and RAM.

if you want a better comparison then look at the 3700+ paired w/ the 148.

Assuming you get some TCCD ram and a good stepping CPU then I don't see why not.

that RAM looks good... it's TCCD I personally probably would have gotten the OCZ platinum rev. 2... but since they're both TCCD you'll get similar results and the g.skill is a bit cheaper.

just for reference most TCCD will do:
DDR400 @ 2-2-2-5
DDR500 @ 2.5-3-3-7
DDR600 @ 2.5-4-4-8

Also, the sweet spot for that RAM will probably be in the 2.7-2.8v. My OCZ seems to like 2.85 and it will do DDR640 @ 2.5-4-4-8 at that voltage on my Asus board, I'm interested to see how it will do on my DFI board. I don't need it to go higher, but I'd like to see it run tighter timings.

with my RAM from what alot of you guys post. BTW its weird-If I feed it 3.0V and leave it on "auto" its cool-if I simply turn it to "manual' and change nothing else, the system becomes unstable-***?
