Cannot connect to internet

Well i came home today from school and found my computer not being able to get on the internet....its not recieving any packet but has sent some, ive try restarting the router, and the modem, and then disabling the conectiong and enabling it again and doesnt seem to be working, what can i do?

check the length of the cable - look for breaks n stuff. I had something similar, it turned out the dog found it tasty

Well obviously it works if you can post... kidding

I'd stick your head out the window (internet-wise) and hook yourself up right to your modem if it's got any sort of router function whatsoever. I'd reinstall your ethernet drivers, try a different card if you have to. I *love* having like 3 pci 10/100 cards lying around that work...it's a very important step in ruling out that your card AND your drivers work right.

i will try that, but my family computer and my sis's lappy use the wireless, so i cant really use the direct to modem but i will try

Need this help as soon as pisble, ive tried new ethernet cable and it didnt work, and ive also tried a new ethernet card and that did the same thing, no packets are being received....

Click start and then run and type without the quotes "ipconfig /flushdns" and see if you can connect. This will flush your DNS cache.

Check firewalls. Reset and configure the router again if you have one which Im assuming you do since you use wireless. Flush and register the dns with the following commands in a command prompt. ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /register dns. Check ip config and be sure that you have all of the necessary IP requirements for getting to the internet. You obviously have to have an IP address that is compatible with your local network. You have to have a default gateway that should be the IP address of your router and also DNS addresses that should be the IP address of your router. Also run the ping command and ping google.com or something. If you can get a ping it you fundamental services are ok and it might be your browser that is jacked up. Check to make sure you dont have a proxy inserted or something. Try a different browser like firefox. If still nothing try a trace route command which is " tracert <insert address here> " If you dont get any response the problem lies within your machine somewhere. Check your services by entering services.msc in the run box. Make sure all of the fundamental services for TCP/IP are running, DHCP, DNS client etc. Get back to me and let me know what happened after doing some of that.

Digital what are the exact prompt i did the "ipconfig /flushdns" and that didnt work so the other one is 'ipconfig /register dns" ?

and im using a wireless desktop that is my familyds right now, and mine is wired

It is exactly, "ipconfig /flushdns" and "ipconfig /registerdns" respectively. If it gives you errors then you may have some corrupted system files in which you might want to try a repair install on windows. Corrupted system files could definately cause TCP/IP to not work correctly. Tell me exactly what it tells you when you perform these commands.
