Dual booting windows XP

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
Hi, on my old computer I had windows on 2 hard drives and at startup it asked me which copy I wanted to boot with. But on my new computer it doesnt ask me, even though I have XP pro on both hard drives. Also one hard drive is IDE and one is SATA if that makes a diff. Thanks

do you have your BIOS set to boot from BOTH HDs? Sometimes, if you don't, it won't boot from both. Also, what file system are you using. Also, is SP2 installed. All of those could be a factor. Is the system recognizing both harddrives?

Did you install both after hooking them into a new computer?
Or did you just put them in the system without installing them there?

Also, post copy of your boot.ini (located at c:\\)

A dual boot system will look something like this (well, this is a triple boot system):

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\WINDO WS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\\WINDOWS="Micr osoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\\WINDOWS="Micr osoft Windows XP Home" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\\WINDOWS="Wind ows Server 2003 Enterprise" /fastdetect /debugport=1394 /channel=5

So there is a chance that if you edit c:\\boot.ini to have some seconds for timeout and a new line like this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\\WINDOWS="Micr osoft XP Pro 2" /fastdetect

It may work

THat should work if Windows is installed on the first partition of your second drive.
If it is on a second partition, then just change that number. Or if it is on the same drive, change the drive to be 0 and increment the partition instead.

You can change "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" to say anything you want - like "Gaming OS" and the other one "Test OS" or whatever.
