You can get a 7800gt for around $300 or less on newegg.com right now. I believe the 6800gt is around $250 or more, so you are looking at $500. The 7800gt will outperform x2 6800gt's in almost every aspect. I would tell your friend to get 1 7800gt and save up for maybe another one later.

are you sure 1 7800gt will out perform 2 6800gt's?... i dont think it would...

but it would make sense to go with 1 7800gt and save up for another one because they will be very cheap in about 4-6 months...

2 6800gs = 370-400
1 7800gt is about 290.

i would get one gtx or gt and sli them later. dont even think about the 6800gt's, two 6800 gs is an ok option but probably not the best use of your money.

ok the question was,"what is better?" of those options, the 2 6800gt's is the best performer, but also the worst preformance to money value... like we all have said, if your friend is smart he will get 1 7800 and save up for another later... he doesnt NEED 2 7800's right now... so save up for another when they get really cheap

Ya if your friend is willing to spend 400$ on video cards just tell him to get an x1800xt now (well in a few weeks when they drop a tad more) and just save for a 2nd one.

The 1800xt will destroy the gt, and comes with 512mb of ram. Decently future proof and hopefully will be dropping in price since the 1900 just came out and the 7900 series will drop in a few weeks.

400 - 2x6800gs
450 - 1800xt which will beat the sli setup in every aspect and consume less power

I think that 2 6800 GT's are almost as good, if not just as good as one GTX, im sure they're better than a GT. What I told him to do now, is just to buy a 7800 GT now, and wait til hes got an extra $300 layin around and sli those for just a little bit more per card than an sli 6800 GT setup.

Geez i wish it was me who had the option of SLi, only one pci-x slot on my crap Abit board...

Yes, the 7800GT is better than two 6800 GT/GS. The only exception is with two 6800 Ultras, which will outperform the 7800GT and even the GTX in some cases.
hmm... i always thought 2 6800 GT's were equal if not better than the 7800.
cant complain..
