Am i missing something? lots of people talking about putting the car in neutral but why not just shut the car off and save the engine? I mean, when the engine blows, you'll be out of power steering anyways.....

Call them ignorant maybe but don't assume they are stupid. There are things I know how to do that I am sure you don't. I would not assume you are stupid because of that, you just don't have the same experience and training that I do.

Also wanted to add its always easier to judge someones actions when watching something on the news or reading about it afterward. Little 20/20 hind site if you know what I mean.

Most modern cars that has DBW has rev limiter,when you put the car in neutral the rpm will bounce at the limiter. The engine will not be damaged. The advantage of putting the car in neutral is you retain power steering and power brake boost, and you eliminate the chance of turning the key back too much to the locking position where it'll lock up the steering.

The guy must have been pumping his brakes to let them get too hot without stopping the car first. Car and Driver did a couples tests and brakes were more then enough to bring a car at full throttle to a stop.

random thought's , hitting the brakes on a vehicle with a stuck throttle ( over 50% ~ ): the power assist is vacuum based , and now the available vacuum is lower than usable to be effective for the brake booster . vacuum is highest @ idle .
you may get one good application , which isn't very effective @ 90 mph .

shutting off the ignition on vehicles equipped with " start " button :
not sure about toyota but on a mazda there are 2 modes , push and hold for 3 seconds , and panic attack , pushing the button more than 6 times in several seconds .
yes you lose power steering , and brake assist , but the steering wheel will not lock until vehicle speed is below 3 mph , and the drivers door is opened .

the advent of " smart " ( stupid ) keyless entry has created a nightmare for technicians .
what if scenario : driving along with the keyless fob sitting in the center console , child in passenger seat grabs keys and throws them out the window .
not that i have encountered this , but it's only a matter of time .

i will never buy a new car , technology has gotten out of control .
it seems that the little electronic convenience's ( navigation , blue tooth , ipod , back up camera ,etc. ) have taken priority over safety items .

no thank you , if i want traction control i will put it in 4 wheel drive , and antilock brakes , just dont push the pedal so hard .

the vehicle i learned to drive was a 68 chevy pickup , no power anything !!!
so i am accustomed to doing without .
