The lever near the driver seat. It is also called the parking brake. People normally use it when they park the car on a hill.

Some vehicles do not have the parking brake anymore though.

In the prius its the pedal to the far left. In other cars, it is the hand brake.

Also a prius can easily do 90 it just sounds like hell.

And unless you think that normal people go through the gas problems that you have suffered (which, if you didn't already know, isn't normal for most people nowadays), I think if you're running out of gas every other Tuesday, you may have made some deeper errors.
I had a car that kept dying randomly....turns out it was very prone to condensing water in the tank. It would condense too much water, any time after it got below a half tank of gas. I was stranded about 3 times before I finally figured it out.

Also wanted to add its always easier to judge someones actions when watching something on the news or reading about it afterward. Little 20/20 hind site if you know what I mean.
But knowing how to safely deal with a situation when driving is something you should be able to do, its not like some speciality skills. This toyota issue is known to all now, if you choose to be ignorant when you know its a possibility then your stupid.

Could he not find the key, or the brakes, or neutral/clutch?

Edit: nevermind, i read it.

What's an emergency brake?
Sometimes they are called parking brakes or handbrakes.

Downshifting is a terrible idea for normal driving, it wears out the transmission which costs thousands, brakes cost hundreds. Now if it was a life or death you do what you have to.

Your "slam on the brakes and hope for the best" really made me laugh...what do you think brakes are for?

Oh lawd! So you're telling me they told him to pull the handbrake at 50mph? Or is this some kind of fancy new 'parking brake' that brakes all 4 wheels instead of just the back 2?

I'll stick to cars from anywhere in the 60's to the late 90's.

Kthxbai.

And, my dad still doesn't understand why I prefer older cars over newer ones.

The tough part of the Prius going out of control with a stuck accelerator (which isn't just a pedal sticking, its the computer pinning the accelerator) is that the transmission is whats called an eCVT. This continuously variable transmission is directly interlinked with the fly by wire system and in turn could disable the shifting of gears as inside the transmission, there are no actual gears.

If this problem is electronic and electric as all reports are saying, and not a mechanical defect in the pedals like Toyota is saying, its very possible the car wouldn't shift to neutral.

Ah, the very problem of American drivers. They got too lazy to drive manuals, so automatics were designed. Now, we got a lot more problems, such as, texting while driving.

I'm guilty of texting while driving, albeit, I drive a 5-speed as well. I naturally pay more attention to the road because of it.
