How often have you owned a car that would accelerate without driver input. This isn't moronic, this is ignorance. Huge difference... If you can even call it ignorance considering this is an issue that was NEVER supposed to happen. Hell, this isn't ignorance, perhaps on Toyota's part for sure.

I'm guilty of texting while driving, albeit, I drive a 5-speed as well. I naturally pay more attention to the road because of it.
A good automatic is superior to any manual shift transmission. An automatic is just a natural evolution to the transmission, not something that coexisted with manuals. Early manuals were probably more complex in operation than the ones today.
And don't scapegoat some other cause for your own folly people. Navigation is a choice, texting/talking on your cell is a choice, driving butt-naked is a choice. Perhaps a more compelling one to make considering the automation of cars, but it still your choice, your free will. Just make the right choice.
As far as nationalizing manual transmission... That wouldn't work because I highly doubt you can drive as far on manual transmissions as you could with autos simply because of fatigue. Ever since my grandfather became a senior he detested driving a manual because fatigue. It was something he loved to do during his 20's and 30's.Edited by BizzareRide - 3/9/10 at 5:28am
