The big three made the decsion to put automatics in cars because they could charge more for them. People being lazy had nothing to do with it.

Manuals are more efficient than auto in almost every car both are options. Autos do not have a direct link from the wheels to the engine like a stick shift does. More power, more efficiency, more fun.

Fatigue could happen if you're city driving for hours. On the highway long distances it's not bad. I drive to Michigan and Penns. on a monthly bases, and it's not uncomfortable with my 5spd in the least.

I find it interesting people are stating obvious things like" WHy didn't he just put the car in nuetral?" There is a chance(although not reported) that putting the car in neutral won't do a thing. Since everything on the car is computer controlled, it is VERY possible that when a certain event happens, other things happen as well just like... A COMPUTER.

So for all we know when the conditions are met for the car speeding off, there maybe a second underlying issue that does not allow the engine to turn off or the trans to be put in the N.

Sure you can test this out on your car if you like, but your tests are taking place when the computer isn't experiencing a failure unlike these people.


As for the 2 arguing about running out of gas. How do you have everything working perfectly fine and run out of gas? I can understand if there is a leak somewhere or the dials are not reading correctly something due to the fault of the car. But if your car is working fine in terms of the gas system and you run out of gas it's your own stupidity for not taking the time to look at the gauge and go to a gas station. It isn't a normal thing for the car to just run out of gas one day unless you choose not to put gas in it. Although I've only been driving for 4 years, I never ran out of gas. Have I come close? Yea but that was due to me putting off filling up. Other wise my tank is never more than an 1/8 below.

Fatigue with a 5spd? That's a joke.

But I agree with what some people said. People are morons. Not ignorant, just morons. You have a car that is speeding to 90mph on its own, and you decide to call 911?!! Seriously throw it in neutral, sure engine will be revving but at least it wont be accelerating. The police couldn't tell the person to shift into neutral? HE TOLD HIM TO FREAKING THROW ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE!!! That is the most unsafe maneuver he could have done! What if he just locked the rear up going 90? The car would be completely out of control. HE is lucky he did it in tandem with the brakes and didn't turn the steering wheel or anything. IDIOTS from both parties.

I agree with shutting off the car too, but sometimes you can loose brake pressure form lack of vacuum and some moron would probably turn the key all way off locking the steering wheel up.

wau honestly how long do you need to figure out that the car is accelerating?.....sure as hell a lot faster than it takes a prius to hit 90......i drove one and i think a 1990 Geo Metro 3 cylinder is faster......people are now looking for ways to get money from Toyota.......the person was probably speeding then saw a cop...."hmm.....how do i get out of this?...oooh i know!"

Guys I drive a 2009 Audi A4 and I dont think you can shut the car off while its in drive... You would have to put it in park and then push in the key to shut it off. I think this guy got scared and didn't think properly... that what happens to most people they get scared and dont think logically...

Don't quite agree with that. I had a transmission go on me in a full size pickup doing 70mph. That in turn shut the engine off, which shut the power steering off. Believe me, you notice it. Trying to get on to the shoulder, in traffic with a gradually slowing truck, with no power steering isn't easy. A Prius would not be quite as bad though I don't think.
