[Mac OSX] Setting up the SMP (CPU) client - Page 5

Ryann, whats the difference between the Console and "systray equivalent" version?

Cause from the feedback im getting, ppl are really far from those PPD estimates on the first page.

Did u use another Client for crunching more PPDs?

I know I am not Ryann but I can answer that clients produce the same PPD as long as you have them configured the same. The reason people running Macs are getting a lot less PPD is because of a software update for Snow Leopard, something that the people that fold for Mac are working on right now to try and correct. The client has no bearing on the low PPD that I am aware.

i'm using a macbook pro 15" C2D 2.4ghz
in the first post it says i should be making about 1.7k PPD

I don't see this happening...
currently running a 6051 WU
Core = Unknown
Credit = 481points
TPF seems to be around 9min

19min x 100 = 1900min / 60 = 32hrs
so 32hrs just to get 481points...
something must be wrong????

any tips?

Thats pretty much whats happening here, just a different WU, but similar TPF and estimates. That is why i asked!

it must be the mac client or something...

i have a windows laptop folding also....

C2D T8100 2.1Ghz
Project P6069
Core A3
TPF 15:31
PPD 1524
Credit 1643

hehe must be hating on the Mac... cuz 481 credit on a mac vs 1643 credit on pc
would be nice if they could also make a gpu client for the mac... the only way i can fold on my gpu for my MBP is if i use vmware or bootcamp... either way i rather work in osx

I would really like to know what it is about the update to OS X that caused such a drastic drop in PPD for Mac folders. Hopefully the OS X folding team can shed some light on the topic sooner rather than later. Especially for people with Mac Pros, they have a lot of processing power in both CPU and GPU that could be put to good folding use if only OS X would be able to output the PPD that the system is capable of.

The new OSX release (Lion) shouldn't be having any problems from what I have been experiencing. If there are any problems that do come up. Let me know and I will look into it.

Becaus of the current ongoing foldathon i decided to put my MBP (i5-540M, 2,53GHz 2 cores 4 threads) to work and i installed the smp client.
Temps got higher so the fans started spinning faster, at 6000RPM the noize wasnt to bad but it was to loud to sleep so i googled arround and i found this:

download:
Code:
http://calxalot.net/downloads/versions/fahlimit/0.6/fahlimit-0.6-osx.tgz
description:
Code:
% ./fahlimit -help

fahlimit version 0.6

usage: fahlimit [options]

options:
-daemon run in background. implies -persist
-persist don't exit if no cores are detected
-fallback if no cores are detected, try fallback of /usr/bin/killall. implies -persist
-percent nn percent time cores should run. valid range is 20-90 (default 70)
-version show version info and quit

description:

fahlimit is for reducing the cpu load caused by the folding@home core.
it works by alternately pausing (SIGSTOP) and continuing (SIGCONT) all cores "FahCore_".
this is useful, for instance, in reducing the operating temperature of a laptop.

typical usage would be

fahlimit -daemon -percent 65 # to start
  killall fahlimit # to stop
thought this might help to get some macbooks folding...
