Following are features enabled. If I have something on I don't need please tell me so I can disable it:

The networks are bridged (the A87 comes with a Nvidia and a Marvell NIC) and the following are installed and checked

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
NWLink NetBios
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol
Network Monitor Driver
Microsoft TCP/IP version 6
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
-- TCP/IP everything is auto (IP and things)

Q: is the laptop connected to the wireless at the same time you connect through the cable?

If so, this is very possibly the problem. Disable the wireless and 'repair' the connection on both. Try then.

Laptop Wireless is disabled, has never been configurerd (since i've never had a wireless network to set it up on).

When it gives me the limited or no connectivity warning I click repair and it says unable to assign new IP (I think this is from memory)

I've even shut both systems down and turned them on at same time.

This has gotten me really baffled - from the looks of things it could be an issue with windows but we've tried that. I cant be the NIC's or the cable.

Anyone else?

Crossover cable installed
Athlon XP Pro with SP2
Sempron XP Home with SP2

network connection wizards on both

Norton Internet Security 2005 on both, and they're both listed in trusted sites for home.

I hate reinstalling !!
