Greetings, hope this place is friendlier....

Hello all, I'm new to OCing, but not new to cmoputers, or the internet. I am trying to update my system info (i'm building a new setup this weekend) in my CP but it keeps stating the server is unavailble.

I'll keep trying.

I come here after leaving another OC forum where a moderator called me an idiot, in a thread he started with a preface about no personal attacks or flames. Simply because I suggested holding off on upgrading now because of Conroe later this year was not a sound idea, given the vast unknowns of that chip's abilities, price, and compatibility.

When I pointed out that irony, he banned me for 3 days, but I had already decided not to go back there anyway.

Anyway, I've looked around a bit and seems like there's a good base of knowledgeable, friendly people here, so I joined up.

My new system will consist of;

ASUS P5WD2 - Premium

Intel 920 2.8Ghz Presler

512MB Corsair XMS DDR2 PC5400 (I know, I need more RAM, long story, I was supposed to get RAM from a friend, spent my budget on everything else, then found out I would have to buy my own RAM LOL)

120GB Seagate PATA 7200RPM
300GB Seagate SATA 7200RPM

PNY 6800GS Video Card

Xion 600w dual rail PSU

My first priority is for more memory, and some better cooling to really be able to push the system.

That's good to hear, I'm a long time member on a couple other forums for my other hobbies, and that was a new expierence for me.

Wierd though, when I posted this, I got that same "Server unavailable" message, but the post still went through. My system info in CP is updated, but it was the same message making me think it hadn't worked.

Uploading my avatar worked flawlessly though.

heya! Well that sounds like a sucky forum...but yeah I've been with this forum for about a week or so, and everyone here is VERY friendly and EXTREMELY helpful. The volume of knowledge within this community is astonishing!

Anyway...regarding your proposed new system, if you really wanna overclock and push your rig to its ultimate performance, I strongly reccommend getting an AMD Opteron in favour of that Intel of yours. I don't have an Opteron, but from what everyone here's been saying: an Opteron runs at much lower temperatures and is a lot easier to clock without putting too much pressure on your STOCK cooling.

You may want to get a nice big f/h for your CPU for overclocking...if you ever come across a big sack of money lying on the side of the road, get a phase-change cooling system for ulitmate coolness (literally).

Also, what case are you planning on getting (or making), and what kind of case cooling will you be getting? Make sure you get some intake and exhaust fans strapped to that puppy or zzzap!

and yes....you NEED more ram! :S

Sorry, I'm an Intel man

The main use of my system is for video editing, DVD burning, and multi-tasking Excel with multiple Firefox windows and tabs, IRC programs, ect. I don't game that much or extreme enough to take me to the darkside (AMD)

I'm going to re-use my exsisting case while I plan and design (and pay for) a project case I have planned. My current one is a KINGWIN Mutant X, 2 80mm intakes (Front and side) and 2 80mm exhuast (rear). The 3Ghz Prescott I have now idles at 39c with AS5 and a lower end ThermalTAKE copper HSF....
