Four years later...

I built my last (Desktop) PC when I was in high school. It was an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ on an A8N-SLI Premium Motherboard. It's gotten to the point where my laptop blows the thing out of the water speed wise, so I decided it's finally time for new stuff. I'm itching to build this thing, but still waiting on the CPU fan

The boxes are coming in, here's what I've got:
* CPU: Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz
o http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115225
* Motherboard: Asus P6X58D Premium
o http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131614
* RAM: OCZ Gold 3 x 2GB
o http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227365
* PSU: OCZ SilentPower 700W
o http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341019
* Case: Antec P180

Here's what's on the way:
* Cooler: Noctura UH12P 1366 SE
o http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835608007
* Hard Drives: WD Caviar Green 2TB (WD20EADS)

Here's what I'm taking from my old machine:
* Hard Drives:
o Boot (Windows): Seagate 7200.11 500GB
o Boot (Ubuntu): Seagate 7200.10 250GB
o Storage: WD Caviar Black 1TB
o Storage: WD Caviar Black 1TB
o Storage: Seagate 7200.12 1TB
* Optical:
o Lite-On DVD+-RW (SATA)
* Video Card: 7600GT

What will come later:
* Video Card: something not 4 years old
* SSDs: whenever they stop being a huge pain in the ass to use.

Same thing here. When i got my G50vt and realized it is just as fast as my 5000+ i told myself it's time for an upgrade. The only thing slowing it down compared to my former desktop is gpu.

If you hadn't already bought those parts i would have said to wait quarter if you could. AMD is about to drop those Thuban processors, no telling if Intel will drop or increase their prices to remain competitive not to mention they (Intel) is getting ready to drop it's newest line of processors as well.

SSD can be had for cheap, the problem is is that they are limited to the small sizes. I'm a gamer myself and i got a mp3 players so i need lots of space, those SSDs aren't cheap enough...yet. And they are a pain in the ass to use, i've read to many complaints not only newegg but other forums of SSDs dying, it seems the kinks haven't been worked out yet.

If there is money left over at least get that nice new rig a 5770 or a 5850... (then you can cf them later =) )

SSD is like last priority... so your load times decrease a bit... TBH just raid 0 those 1TB caviar blacks... if you want more speed... short stroke them to like 200-250gb each and the raid..

There's always money left over...I'm cheap as hell
I also generally sell my old stuff when I replace things (this applies for car modifications, computers, etc). It's amazing how much you can get for thigns on eBay.

I just sold 2GB of DDR400 ram from my old machine on eBay for $150 - I kid you not. It cost me $200 four years ago (Corsair Dominator - very high end stuff), but stilll, I sold it for more than enough to buy my 6GB of DDR3...

6 cores will be out...but so what? I don't need it (or the $1000 price tag). I also waited way too long already to build this machine (I was waiting on the 930 to come out for a month or so, and before that I was waiting hoping the 1366 stuff would stop being so expensive). Intel has held the prices high on this stuff way too long - there won't be big drops soon. I think a 930 overclocked to ~4GHz will still beat the hell out of my 2.2GHz dual core AMD, and I can upgrade later if need be.

SSD's seem like a pain in the butt - flashing firmware, losing data, etc. I'm not ready to be bothered yet - I have so little free time that dealing with that sorta stuff isn't really an option. I think in the next year or two they will become much more reliable.

SSDs have come a long way in the last several months. I've been running them on my netbooks for 6+ months now and I got 2xSSDs in raid 0 on my new build. None of them have given me any trouble. Firmware updates aren't a big deal if it already has TRIM support on it.

Your build looks good though. I would do what rmp said and put the Black in raid 0 as your main drives. What are you using the system for? BTW...I might be interested in your old cpu/mobo if you're selling them.

System is for alot of things:
  • Media (it will be connected to my Sony LCD TV)
  • Boring office work (e-mail, reports, etc)
  • Programming (developing various software, etc)
  • Storage (I have a laptop that I use for work/school, but I keep all my older docs, music, movies, etc on the desktop, hence all the HDDs)
  • A little gaming (should starcraft II ever come out)
  • Video Encoding - I am in the process of encoding my DVD collection into decent quality h.264 stuff, because it's easier to have it on hard drives then to move all my DVD's back and forth as I move about the country.

The i7 is probably a bit of overkill but my old machine was crawling, and I'm a big fan of doing it right when I build a new machine so it'll last a while. Clearly the last one did.

As for the SSD - Newegg had 30GB OCZ Vertex's for < 80 bucks the other day (might have even been 70). If a very nice SSD that's 60gb gets to the $2/gb price point i'll probably bite. But for now I'll just boot off of one of my other drives - they're all fast.

No raid 0 on the blacks for me...they're for storage / media.
