video card upgrade suggestions?

Thread Starter
first of all before you flame my new machine i got this at a hell of a deal it was 400$ and i couldent pass it up for the price: emachines T6524. its a good stable machine except for one thing: the video card is crap, x200 128mb intigrated it is on shared memory and steals some of my 1GB ram. what im asking for is which card is best for my machine?

my comp details are below, i would like to get a x800 type xt, xl GT etc.. between 150-200$ i have a pci-E 16x slot to put it in but i cant decide which on newegg to get or if you can find cheeper somewhere else that would be great also. another problem is that im limited on my PSU its only 400W. and im not currently overclocking anything so which would be a good low power card? Thanks in advance

Errr...
No on the x800 series. They are old tech, shader wise. You should go with a 7800GT or x1800XL, both support SM3.0, whereas the x8X0XXXX cards only support SM 2.0.

if you noticed i only have 150-200$ to spend im not about to drop a 500$ card into this thing that would cost more than the machine itself, and this motherboard has an ATI rs480 chipset so it would be best to keep with ati

Not sure where people get the ideas of chipset brand and graphics card brand have compatibility issues, but its completly unfounded and not true.

ATI cards work fine with nVidia chipsets and nVidia cards work fine with ATI chipsets.

Either way I'd suggest either : X800 GTO, X850 Pro or X800 XL.

All of these perform great, with the X850Pro and X800XL performing better then the GTO as well as costing more.

The Pro and GTO also have a good chance at unlocking the pipelines, and they overclock well, where as the X800 XL can't unlock (already has 16pipes) and doesn't overclock much, but is also the best stock performer.

Also consider a 6800 GS, which performs at about the same level of an X850 pro, and overclocks decently, but you'd have to sacrifice the superior ATI drivers for the nVidia card.

Best bet would probably be the Sapphire X800 GTO2, they sell for about 180 right now and unlock to a full X850 xtpe.

Here is a place that will give you more info on your machine http://s2.invisionfree.com/emachineu...php?act=SC&c=3 , and http://www.emachineupgraders.info/ . I have a similar machine nearly identical chipset and use an C3D x800 GTO modded to 16p XT. Works great on doom 3 and other sm3 games. I would get the X800 gto2 dual DVI and VIVo from newegg for 189. Thats at your limit but they come with 16pipes now so no modding is necessary and even the the bios is r430 they are actually r480 core cards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ice=&maxPrice=

that Sapphire card your lookin at is good but its slim to none it will mod for 30 more you can get the GTO2 with all i6p and a r480 core which is the same used as the x850xt pe. If thats too high you might try the x1600 pci/e i think you can get it for under 160 and it has sm3 support but make sure its the 256 bit mem inte4rface not the 128. its decent for a midrange card but an x850xt pe will still beat it. Heres a list http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ice=&maxPrice= the Sapphire one 512mb is the best but out of stock at newegg.
