Please Help Me Decide CPU

Thread Starter
Ok well ill tell you what I do
Homework
Game (Battlefeild 2 Mostly maybe fear, doom or wow)
Burn CDs/DVDs
Listen to music (Mp3's mostly)
Programming(Java mostly now, C++ later maybe)
Video Encoding(Have never done it because system is too slow but would be nice)

I have been looking at 4 proccesers

Amd 165 Dual core opteron
Amd Athlon X2 3800
Amd Athlon X2 4200
Amd 148 Opteron (With Hopefully a good stepping...)

I want the best OCablility, Yet I want it to be stable. Also, I want a decent clock speed before OC because I wont OC until at least my warranty runs out.

Thanks for the help

The 165 Denmark, for sure.
2x1mb cache is better than 2x512 cache (the X2's have only 1mb of total L2).
The 165 Denmark will probabally OC the best out of the dual core bunch.

Go for the AMD 4200. It costs less than is opertron equivelent, will clock just as high, and the lower price of the athlons lets you buy a processor that goes faster at the stock level.

The 4200 X2 costs a WHOLE lot more than the 165 Denmark. The 165 Denmark is about as much as a 3800 X2, but is more powerfull because of its 2mb L2 cache, even though it is clocked at a lower speed. And sereously, how is AMD gunna know of you OCed your CPU? How can they tell that it was running at a higher-than-stock speed? Don't worry about screwing your warranty by OCing.

either get the 3800 (way beter oc'er then the 4200 can overclock passed the speed of the 4200 easy i did it in maybe one night.. =]) or get the opteron 165... one or the other.. dont setle ofor either of the other two .. you wont be dissapointed.. both are dual core.(so you can burn a cd and play bf2 at the same time =]!) algiht well hope i was helpful -trey
(EDIT) and the 165 is very picky on its oc'ing settings, you have to mess with it for a LooNnnnGggg time... took me about a week for the cpu alone... not including the RAm.. my 3800 probably took two or three days... 12 hrs for cpu settings, 12 hrs for stability testing, 12 hrs for ram settings, 12 for stabliy testing.

action trey, im gonna have to ask you to fix up that post so it isnt very offencive. either that your your gonna get some warnings sometime soon. =)

id say the 3800+ or the Denmark, theyre both good processors. Although with the opteron, not to sure on that. =|... The part where trey said about the ram is totally untrue, you can basically use any mem if you have a capatable motherboard.

=)

The Cache on the CPU is relavant... when the CPU can take advantage of it!
For example the additional cache on a SD vs a Venice equates to a 200MHz increase in performance.

stay away from the X2 4200, only 2x512k L2, a waste of cash, the cheaper ones will probably OC as high. The best bet would be the opty 170, 10x multi..sure it's more money, but that's the best bet.
Of those choices you listed in the first post, either the opty 165 or the 148..If you do not plan on overclocking to start with, the dual core will outperform the 148 in everything BUT games. In games, the 148 will outperform the 165, stock speeds. I recommend at the least overclocking to the limit on stock volts...no harm in that, FREE speed.
