An X2 4200???

Thread Starter
Just a simple question ... Ive been thinking about getting an X2 for a long time and Ive decided on the 4800 but I dont have the money... So how good does an X2 4200 play games if I were to pop in a X1900XTX in there with it? And how much would it bottleneck my grfx card?

Dont get the 4200, waste of cash, I would get the 3800 before that. Unless you were to look into the opteron dual cores.
The dual core processors aren't great for gaming due to the overclocking limit, single cores overclock much higher. So your x1900 will be bottlenecked pretty good. I would recommend the opteron 170 or 175 and overclock it to the 2.8+ marks if you can...that will be your best bet unless you want to go with a single core cpu.

If you're going to get the 4200+, you might as well get the 4400+ because of the 1MB L2 cache. I have the 4200+ and I'd get a 4400+ if I was buying a CPU right now. Just overclock the processor to like 2.6 or so and you'll be pretty good. The FX60 is basically the 4400+ running at 2.6. The X2's just dropped in price while the Opterons increased in price because AMD wants the opterons to be used for what they are made for: servers and workstations.

I've heard that dual core AMD processors actually OC quite well. I reccomend an Opteron Denmark 165 over all of the current dual core processors out there. It costs about the same, if not less than an x2 3800, yet has 2 times the cache, and will get to 2.8Ghz + with mid range air cooling.

I HAVE TO AGREE THERE i would get the 4400 as there cheaper and they can be pushed further than the 4800 alot from what ive heard.. but you will save yourself a bundle plus the 4400 has a 1mb cache anyway.

From what I know, X2 3800+ is a very good oc'er. You could take a look into it.

Frys is selling an Asus SLI Deluxe and AMD X2 4400 for $699 without rebates. I can't find a link but I saw an ad in todays papers. Just thought I might share the good deal.
