I would go with that one guy and use a PC power supply. It would be a lot cheaper than buying all of the diodes and transformers from Radioshack simply because Radioshack along with Best Buy are trying to take over the EARTH and charge you as much as possible.
You can get pretty high voltages from wiring a couple of the Molexes in parallel. One Molex has a +5V line and a +12V line, you'd only need a few wired in a series for +50V. Want me to draw a diagram?

if you want the event to have more flair why not chuck in some old submarine batteries ,also it will be more obvious what was going on when "They"come to cart you away

You could use a diode and a capacitor (gives a sine curve)
