Dual Monitors

Thread Starter
On the weekend I can use my mom's 19 lcd, so I can run dual 19's. I was wondering what hardware I would have to get. I have onboard graphics, and am gonna get a 62 or 6600 gt soon, and was wondering how I would do it? Could I play a game on one, and type on another? I also do a lot of photo editing for my church website, so I was wondering can I edit photos and work on the website at the same time, just on different monitors? Thanks

Your video card needs two VGA/DVI connections. Your drivers for the videocard have the software built into it to run a dual monitor setup. You won't be able to do with your onboard graphics. The only thing you could do with that is run a vga splitter but both screens would see the same image. Once you get your videocard, you go into properties and enable dual monitor setup.

Well i read something about running a monitor off of one, then getting a cheap pci card to run the other, was wondering if I could run one off of the pci-e card, and one off of the onboard to minimize the load on hte vid card if I was palying a game. Can you reccomend a card for about 120$ amercican that can run dual displays?

There are quite a few in your price range that will run dual monitors. If you don't have an ATI/Nvidia preference there are an array of 6600's from different manufactures that will suit your needs.

Ok, I was in your situation once and let me tell you, it isn't what its hyped up to be, don't get me wrong, if someone were to take my 2nd monitor I'd probably end up crying or murdering them. lol.

But as far as gaming and doing other things (i.e. chatting): NO
However, its very good for schoolwork and desktop applications and things like that, the problem with dual monitors is that each monitor is still acting as the same desktop.

So lets say you're running Counter-Strike in a window on your desktop, if you click out of the window then Counter-Strike will be an inactive window switching to whatever you clicked on, so think if you were playing counter-strike fullscreen, you would click somewhere in your second monitor and it would minimize counter-strike and you'd be in your chat window, etc. Deeming the 2nd monitor (during gaming) soely on temperature monitoring and I use it for viewing my playlists in Winamp.

Now there may be some sort of program out there that eliminates that, but from what I know all I use is UltraMon: http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/

As for the videocard, go with the 6600GT, I am running a 5700LE and a PCI GeForce 2 MX400 and it runs pretty good for a bare minimum 2nd desktop.

LightSource, I went down to a comp shop and it was real handy to be able to browse and edit photos on one monitor and then do the actual website editing on another. I am in need of a vid card anyway, and have a second monitor I can use on the weekends. So it is sort of jsut getting a vid card that can run dual displays. They are both vga, not dvi, will it still work?

Absolutley, but how much are you looking to spend on this videocard? Hopefully you'll say $200 becuase I've got the perfect one for you, otherwise go with the 6600GT.
