Ok kind of noobish Q here but im setting up my first network and i just wanted to know if putting the internet through a router slows it down? I know sending it over a wireless conection will obviosely limit it but if its wired does it slow at all? Thanks

Here's an answer you probably don't want to hear - "it depends".

If you buy a cheapo firewall that does crazy application layer firewalling (stateful inspection, etc), it's possible that it will affect performance. It also depends on how fast your Internet upload and download speed is. If you are getting 1.5 Mbps or less, then you should see no performance issues at all. If you getting up into the 6.0 Mbps range, then it's possible that your firewall could slow you down. It all depends on the processing power of the firewall, the firewalling features, and your overall internet speed. Now, wireless isn't going to kill it at all unless your have a 6.0 Mbps internet connection and wireless B. Even though wireless B is "11 Mbps", you really only see about 4-6 Mbps actual throughput, so it could possibly be a bottleneck.

Hopefully this made sense. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Yeah that helped thanks Should be fine then because its only a 1MB connection. It should be ok as well because the router is mid range (ish) Thanks again
