Metro 2033 DX9 vs DX11 (with and without Tessellationn and ADOF)

Well, was stoked to see DX11 in action. Not so much with this title. I didn't notice any gains with DX11 turned on during my first 2 hours of playing, aside from the fact that my FPS was cut in half in some cases.

Be sure to compare everything in these pictures as there is a fog-like smoke that was moving in front of me, along with the glowing dust particles from the fella on the right. For some reason, lightbulbs also like to flicker different shades of yellow/red/orange to try and confuse me

I forgot to enable to FPS capture overlay on FRAPs, so it's only present on the DX9 screens. I did jot down what FPS I was getting in DX11, though.

This is with my 5850 OC'd to 900/1250 with 65% fan speed.

Max settings, 4xAA, 16xAF, Tessellation ON, Advanced Depth of Field ON, DX11 - FPS 20-25

Max settings, AAA (games default AAA setting), 16xAF, Tessellation ON, Advanced Depth of Field ON, DX11 - FPS 25-33

Max settings, AAA, 4xAF, Tessellation ON, Advanced Depth of Field OFF, DX11 - FPS 55

Max settings, AAA, 4xAF, Tessellation OFF, Advanced Depth of Filed OFF, DX11 - FPS 65

Time for DX9.

Max settings, AAA, 16xAF, Tessellation OFF (DX11 only), Advanced Depth of Field OFF (DX11 only), DX9 - FPS in picture

Max settings, AAA, 4xAF, Tessellation OFF (DX11 only), Advanced Depth of Field OFF (DX11 only), DX9 - FPS in picture

Short version: DX11 maxed with tessellation and advanced depth of field active:
20-25 FPS

DX9 maxed:

Never dips below 60 FPS

So there you have it. You can be the judge, but as for me... with this particular title, I won't be playing it DX11 enabled due to the huge performance hit I took and the little gain that was received (if any).

EDIT: Depth of field = Field of view. Same thing, too tired

This is proof that overclocking a video card to extreme levels is overrated, flame all you want. With my 775/1125 overclock, I was getting the exact same frames with the same settings, except I'm playing at 1920x1080. Now I just play in DX11 with everything on very high and FOV & tesselation turned off and my frames stay in the 50's for the most part.
That'll work...

Dunno if this game is more CPU dependent, but your higher OC could have had something to do with it. I see a 10+ FPS boost in games when my card is OC'd compared to the stock 765/1125. I'll hook my PC up to my TV in a bit and see if I get the same FPS at 1080p.

I don't doubt it. I'm just saying that in most games, this one and a handful of others being an exception, my card plays at well above 60 FPS already, so overclocking that high and adding an extra 5-10 fps wouldn't add any value to the game. The only way I'd even notice it is if I had Fraps monitoring it.

Also, this isn't really the best scene to judge DX11 vs. DX9. There's not much going on here.

IMO, if my FPS are going to be slapped in half even when there's absolutely nothing going on as you said, I should at least SEE some kind of benefit. Like I said in the OP, during the first two hours, I noticed no gains from using DX11 aside from the fact that it would frame dip me like crazy when the ugly NPC's were around. Anyone else notice the ugly mouths in this game?

I think it's just due to the game not being optimized for ATI cards yet, at least I hope. Time will only tell though, when the Fermi cards are released and tested on this game. I'm starting to think that Nvidia bribes game developers to favor their cards first or to ignore ATI optimization in the beginning in order to sway people that haven't yet made the jump to a DX11 card.

They look the same. Apart from some color/hue differences.

That's due to the light on my left that flickers different colors. 80% of the lights in this game do it, no idea why. Makes me feel like I'm at a Disco club.

That explains it

But that just leaves us with... "they look the same". I'm starting to question the validity of DX11 effects. They don't seem to stand out (or be noticeable, at all).

I know some of you will feed me the "DX11 is barely out" story and show me Unigine Heaven screenshots... but, hey, so far the facts show that the differences are unnoticeable in actual gameplay.
