Mushkin Enhanced Support - Page 33

Hi Sean! First of all, I've got to say that this is my FIRST Mushkin kit of RAM I purchased, and now I'm kicking myself for not going with you guys first. Your RAM is phenomenal. I got this kit to run at stock 1600MHz 7-8-7-24-1T /w 1.60v.

So I have the 4GB (2x2GB) Mushkin Enhanced Blackline DDR3 1600MHz PC3-12800 CL7 Kit (996782) and I'm running them at this moment: 1550MHz @ 6-8-6-24-1T /w 1.70v. They're more or less overclocked a bit since I tightened up the timings a bit, but lowered the frequency due to the divider.

My concern at this point is the voltage going into the DRAM. I don't have any "extra" cooling solution for the RAM since my space inside my case is limited, but should +.5v to the RAM without extra cooling safe? They passed 6 hours in Prime 95 Large FFT's, but are a bit hot to touch (feels hot, very close to the point where I might have to take my hand off).

Well, I'm not Sean, but I believe I can provide an adequate answer!

DDR3 memory can get warm, but it tends to be cooler than some of its predecessors. Active cooling is absolutely not necessary for running any reasonable speeds and timings.

Heat can cause instability in excessive amounts, but it doesn't seem like that's the case for you. If you have decent case airflow (or really, any at all) you should be fine. If you find one day that your computer crashes and you pinpoint the source of the error to be memory, it might be worth re-working your airflow to hit the sticks a little better. However, it is unlikely that this will every happen.

Long story short, you should be fine.

I have a Mushkin kit I just bought, part number shows in CPU-Z as 991782 (996782). Max bandwidth lists as PC3-10700H (667 Mhz) though it's rated on the XMP as 800 Mhz.

Set at 1600 (8 x 200 bclk, 1.66v) it passed Memtest and Prime95 with 12 hours each test. Timings are 7-9-7-24-74 1T , they run cool at this setting also.

The issue is when I try to under clock it to use the 191 bclk x 8 (trying to oc cpu to 4 ghz on lower bclk) it generally fails testing within minutes with a BSOD.

If I set to 1333, they run stable, if I oc them a bit, they run stable but for some reason around 1528 Mhz I can't get them stable, I've tried setting running the bclk up and down the scale by a factor of 5 each way and loosening the timings as far out as cas 9-11-9-38 to no avail.

Also, since you re-did the Mushkin message board, I've not been able to get back on there, I re-registered and didn't get my confirmation e-mail and no response on the work around contact.

You should be fine, but if you can get some extra or stronger fans in your case to improve the cooling it would be all the better.

Have you updated to the latest BIOS for the mobo?

Some of the 1366 mobos had a hole right in that same area, that one was with CL6, BCLK from 182 to 199 on the 8X memory multi just would not work, this may be the same kind of issue.

For your Mushkin Forum account, try it now.
If it still does not work PM me here or email me.

Thanks Sean, I'll go try the forum again, I'll move this over there once I can log in. I am on the F8 bios and there is an F9, so i will go flash and try again. that 1366 issue sounds exactly like the range I'm having trouble with.

So I ended up buying the 996825 kit, and every time I set the timings to stock 7-8-7-24-31 instead of the default 10-10-10-24-34 on my 790FXB-M3H5 my mobo fails to post with a C1 (memory) error code. Is there a setting I need to enable or disable that I am missing? I heard something about "CKE Base Power Down Mode" being an issue but I don't remember whether it needs to be enabled or disabled...

(I have tried this at all voltage settings from 1.5 which is the minimum my mobo supports to 1.65)

Thanks in advance!

Have you updated to the latest BIOS for the mobo?

If you have the latest BIOS, I suspect that 8-8-7-24 @ 1600 works, but 7-8-7-24 fails to POST.
Will the mobo POST if you set 7-8-7 on the 1333 memory multi?
If it will, increase your HTT to 240 to get the memory to DDR3-1600.

I just checked again, and yes I do have the latest BIOS. That was the first thing I thought of when I started having problems. Another thing is that this RAM isn't on the supported memory list for my motherboard, but I have never actually had RAM not work because of that...

I haven't tried 8-8-7-24 @ 1600, in fact almost nothing under 10-10-10-29 works. I did manage to get it to run at ~1550 9-9-9-25 with the HTT at 233 and the multiplier at 6.67

I am going to mess with this some more when I have time, and if I can't figure it out I am going to try my friend's older 1.85v 7-7-7-20 kit (996657 IIRC) to see if it works better.

Either way, thanks for the help and I will be sure to let you know what my results are!

Question Sean, why does my Callisto always say "SMART Command Failed" on ACHI BIOS Bootup? It's not bothered me enough to try to fix it, but just wondered.
