I currently have two hard drives, one Samsung F3 500GB (7200rpm) and a Samsung EcoGreen 1.5TB (5400rpm). The 500GB drive is currently my main and the 1.5TB drive is mostly empty with some backup stuff on it. Would I lose any significant performance by cloning the 500GB drive to the larger drive and using that as main instead?

Also, what is the best free method for cloning an entire drive? I've checked out Clonezilla, but it always errors 75% of the way through.

yeah from a 7200 rpm to a 5400 you will see a difference in anything you do.

5400RPM hard drives are best left to 1TB-2TB drives that only store things, like music and movies. Never an OS or gaming drive.

You should be using atleast a 7200RPM for games.... and thats the minimum in my opinion. Many people are switching over to SSDs.

Have you ever used a computer with a 5400RPM drive as it's main hard drive? It's terrible, everything takes forever to do anything. Many older Dells, Compaqs, etc shipped with 5400RPM drives, after replacing the hard drive with a 7200RPM drive the system feels 2x more responsive.

It's usually the first thing I replace on computers if the customer is complaining about desktop performance, 5400RPM to 7200RPM is very noticable. The random access times of a 5400RPM drive is a huge bottleneck on the entire system, and thats why SSDs offer such superior desktop peformance over 7200RPM drives - random access times.

Murlocke is right, 5400rpms have a huge difference in performance from a 7200. Music and movies won't notice a lot of slow down, but system and game performance are the two activities that will be adversely affected.

Just be glad you never used a 4800rpm. My buddy had one in his compaq laptop, it was god awful.

It'll take longer to load, but you'll get the same framerates. If things are loaded on the fly, you'll notice it may stutter more often or longer with the 5400RPM drive.

Honestly, the difference you notice depends a lot on the person. I have three SSDs in RAID-0, and I was perfectly fine with using my mechanical 7200RPM for a month while I RMA'd my SSDs.
