Welcome to Moulin Rouge! [56k Warning]

Hi, guys

Yesterday, after having all the necessary parts together, my friend and I have started putting it all together. It was my first time building a rig though I believe he has arleady had some experience with the procedure.

Note: this is my friends rig, not mine! But it was a fun experience

And here are the components:

But it looks so empty and....without filters! But wait, we have stockings!

And here they are: cheap and soon to be dirty.

Beware of the tentacle monster! Save the japanese girls!

What is wrong with her? Why such an unhappy face? I would grin like the cheshire cat if I was on an HD 5870.

So now we thought: Hey, we are all set! Put the sidepanels in their place, connected the monitor and saw...well, that's the point: we didn't see a thing! No signal detected.
But the LEDs of the case were shining and the fans spinning! No beep, no post: it's Google time.
After searching for possible errors we disconnected and reconnected the video card, switched the RAM modules and tried to start with only one, cleared the CMOS (twice), tried another monitor cable. No result.
And if you've paid close attention to the pics you would see that we have forgotten to connect the 8PIN CPU CONNECTOR. We were lucky that my friend has discovered this in the manual and were almost certain everything would work fine...unfortunately, us being certain doesn't mean a thing to the rig.

A little bit discouraged we decided to remount the CPU and after having done that give the system another try. And you won't believe it: still no luck. Now fearing that we might have gotten a faulty part I decided to glance at the monitor for the last time.
No cable connected Nah, that has to be a mistake, it should be "No signal detected". But a quick look to the back of the monitor gave me a shock: indeed, the cable wasn't connected. We forgot to plug it back in after trying the alternative cable!
Swiftly, it was plugged in and the rig was restarted, quietly humming, and then some letters appeared on the screen! IT LIVES! IT LIVES! We were shouting and crying of joy while simultaneously high-fiving the hell out of our palms!

Time to install Win7.

Now all was working fine and great but....oh noes! What are these doing here?

Once again, the case was opened up and RAM installed. All done? No way. After trying to connect a USB stick to the front USB panel and having no signal we realized that we forgot to plug the USB and HD Audio connectors back in after our troubleshooting session.

The windmill full of stockings and red, tempting glow. Welcome to Moulin Rouge!
And that's the name my friend came up with.

Thanks, overquad! Even though I may sound weird but it is quite fun to manage the wires ^^

I had a terribly experience when doing my first build in terms of forgetting the 8 pin cpu power connector as well. For me, I thought I had blown my motherboard! I was paranoid about static electricity and thought that when I was putting the mobo into the case, since it touched the metal, it was surely blown. I was having the same problems, lights on, fan spinning, dvd drive working etc. but the monitor kept on saying "no signal".
I was posting on the Tom's Hardware forums for two weeks, but still not getting anywhere. I went and got a new DVI cable, I RMA'd my mobo (weird that they actually accepted my RMA as in the end there was nothing wrong with the board). Then, a month later a friend finally comes over to help me out. I see him plug in the 8 pin connector and my heart stopped. All of that for nothing! Haha, that one power connector has probably foiled more first time builders than anyone can imagine

I really DID blow up my mobo, same one as Moulin Rouge, in a watercooling mishap. I was a touch perturbed when the new mobo wouldn't give me a signal so I checked the 12v 8 pin about six times before realising I'd forgotten to put the memory in.

At times I am also so concerned about a particular detail that I forget there could be other reasons for the problem.

By the way, I forgot to mention the temperatures: about 32 idle and 55-58 load.
