How much do you want to spend? A 3700+ San Diego would be a good buy, the newer steppings seem to be good oc'ers.

3800+
Depends really on what you are wanting and what you will be using it for...I am going with the opty since they are supposed to be the best OC with x2....The 3700+ San Diego is nice I just built a computer for my brother-n-law with that...very nice and stock HS&F was nice little tricky to get it on but keeps it at 28c idle and around 35c under full load playing Brother in Arms on max settings as well as Call of duty 2 with max settings...he has an ATI x800 GTO video...

Well, there isn't a Venice 3700, theres a 3800, and it's only 512kb L2 cache so that's probably not want you want. Besides, there's no difference between the 3000 and 3800 Venice except for the multiplier.

I'd go for the Sandy if I were you, and like was said earlier, all the new steppings seem to like to overclock

$300 isn't going to buy you a dual core (unless you get a 3800+ X2 and thats still $350+) so 3700+ San Diego or equivalent Opteron.
