Starting first build this week - Any surprises to beware of?

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I'm starting my first build this week, and will be receiving all my parts over the next three days. I'm currently looking at Phenom II Black 965 CPU, Asus M4A79AXTD mobo, ripjaw 2x2g ddr3 1600 (8x8x8x24?), WD caviar black HD, sapphire 4850 512x2 vid card, ocz 700w stealthstream psu, and an Antec 300 case.

Any surprises I should beware of, or general tips? Nothing is too newbish to point out - I really don't know what the hell I'm doing. For instance, are there cables, additional fans, etc I should pick out now, or am I generally all set until I decide to try my hand at overclocking? I picked out most of the parts with an eye towards messing around a bit more in the future without breaking the bank, but right now I just want to get it up and running smooth, as it's nearing finals time and I need a desktop stat.

Thanks for any advice you might have...I'm hitting the sack for the night shortly, but I plan to check this first thing in the morning.

Edit - Also, sorry about the overly descriptive part names - I'm still a total newb, even with respect to the relevant specs.

1. Motherboard risers!

2. Plug in CPU power and front panel headers!

3. Make sure the RAM is completely clipped in.

4. Put in motherboard w/cpu/RAM/cpu cooler in your case before the power supply.

I recommend getting your system completely set up before you try overclocking.

Virgin builders may be overwhelmed by all the psu cords. I just determine which ones I need, put a small tag or tape on it, and dedicate the rest to cable mangement. If you're using on board audio make sure to use the hd plug and not the ac 97 (if you have a choice).

Also, pay attention to the arrows on the side of fans if you're installing them.

the front headers that you will need to plug onto the mobo will be tricky. Also, make use you are properly grounded when assemble everything up.

Sometimes it is better... All the time it is better to install PSU 1st for routing of cables. We call this cable management.

Nice System! I would start out by putting only one stick of RAM in and then after everything is booted up, turn it off and put in the rest.

Good Luck!
