After the three day burn in period, I decided to try to unlock the cores and overclock.

I enabled the firmware option on the bios screen, and set ACC to auto. After the reboot, the system crashed immediately opening into windows. On my chip, only one extra core is unlocked successfully.

I tried lower the timings, increasing vbcore voltage, and even reattaching the heatsink; but, all to no avail--there seems to be no way to stabilize the final core.

The system is completely stable running as a tri-core.

My initial attempts to overclock was 3.6 mhz stable at 1.5v vcore. At 3.7 mhz, it is stable at 1.55 vcore.

I followed Durch's excellent official overclocking guide.

Going to do some more reading and posting to see if anyone would have some ideas for me on how to improve my results.

Before unlocking and overclocking, the motherboard bios reported cpu temperature to be 24 C.

Everlast shows it to be 28 C, but reports each core to be approximately 19 C.

At load, (I assume Prime95? Still pretty new at this), Everlast reports cpu at 32 C, while each core reports 24 - 25 C. Not sure why the difference.

When unlocked to a tri-core (cpu-z reports Athlon II X3 455) overclocked to 3600 mhz (18.0 x 200) @ 1.55 volts, Everlast reports CPU @ 37 - 41 C. The individual core temps are no longer reported after unlocking the cores.

Have been experimenting, and it appears the cpu overclocks much better when run as a dual core.

Initial results show short term stability tests at 4.0 @ only 1.4 volts. I'm planning to run my system at around 1.57 - 1.58 volts. I'm wondering how fast this chip could be running at dual core.

Leaving everything else on defaults and adjusting the multiplier only, initial prime 95 tests show stable at 4.0 mhz. I've only run for about 20 minutes, and not the 24 hour stability test.

Are these results right? At stock bios settings with vcore at 1.39 volts, I can run a dual at 4.0.

Haven't run the full 24 yet, but seems to be stable at 4.2.

Tried to run at 4.3 @ 1.575 volts, but was unstable. Not sure if I want to run the system at 1.6 volts 24/7.

Now, I'm going to try to increase the Reference clock and decrease multiplier to compare and contrast performance.

Temps look good, not sure why the CPU and cores are different when locked...try HWMonitor that's what I use. Wow I know 4.2 is good for a quad so that's real nice, but I wouldn't run 1.6 24/7, in fact 1.55 is pushing it. I'm running my X3 unlocked to 4 cores at 1.5v and I'm not gonna push it higher even though my temps are fine.

Monitor your temps from several apps to get a feel for which one you think is the most accurate, or use them as a basis for comparison.

Personally, I don't like running my X3 chip above 1.5v - I leave it @ 3.5ghz/1.39v

If you check the benchmark charts, I think 1.5-1.6 is the very upper tier of what people are using to pull benchmarks.

If my temperature readings stay within range, aside from shortening my cpu's lifespan, is there any other adverse effects on running it from the 1.5 - 1.6 volt range?

Thus far, my system is completely stable running 4.2 @ 1.55 volts on dual core. On tri, I'd have to up the voltage to 1.58, and only run it at 3.6.

Since most of my games currently aren't optimized for running on multiple cores above duo, the higher clock speed on the duo seems snappier.

When games start utilizing multiple cores above duo, then I'll probably upgrade to a quad core. Until then, my plan is run this chip to the limit, since the chip's longevity is short lived anyway with bulldozer around the corner.

Not that I'm aware of.

I mean there *IS* a threshold at which point you will instantly damage the chip, but I'm not sure what that is.

My worries would be overvolting the chip and producing a steadily increasing instability, requiring you to back down on the volts and clocks later to stay stable.

Along with that could come potential corruption issues.

If you are only gaming and are planning on an upgrade soon, I guess there isn't much else to lose by pushing it that hard.
