If you can find an Opteron 165, then that's probably the best value for money. I bought mine for £220 and it overclocked to 2.8Ghz. However, they are difficult to find at the moment in the UK.
The X2 3800+ is good value. Costs about the same as the Opteron but only has 512Kb of L2 cache per core compared to the Opterons 1MB. They also tend not to overclock quite as far (prob upto around 2.6-2.7Ghz).
If you have the money and really want the L2 cache, then you could get the X2 4400+ as this has the same L2 cache as the Opteron, overclocks quite nicely, but is a fair bit more expensive.

as STE mentioned, the 165 would be the best choice...as a second choice I would get the 170. I really dont like the x2 dual cores, they dont overclock that well and are pricey. The opterons are the better overall choice.
