I dont think my Mobo allows me to increase the multiplier.

Is the Opteron 170 basicaly a X2 with 1MB L2 cache per core then ? Becasuse if it is, the I will go for the 170.

X2 have 1MB L2 cache also, the only exception is the 3800. Buy whichever is the cheapest because you have no guarantee which will clock higher. I don't think you need any multiplier higher than 10 unless you plan on phase change.

I've heard differently.

From what I have read the X2's have a 1MB Cache pool aka 512KB per core whereas the Opterons have 1MB per core.

When do the opterons stop being single core and become Dual Core ? Is it the 165 and upwards because I found a cheapish 170 but it doesnt state that it is a dual core.

But the odds of a higher overclock will be in the 170's favor. I dont like X2's. I dont understand why people buy them when they have options for opterons. especially the 4200, that's a joke.
People are getting 2.7ghz on 3800+ for $300 ! That's a great deal, not very many dual core procs are going to get much faster w/o spending a lot more money.

The 3800+ and 4200+ have 512kb l2 cache per core. The 44 and 48 have 1mb l2 cache per core.

Ya, all of the Winchester cores have 512 per core. I was thinking the 4200 was a Toledo, but it's not. I'd either get a Toledo core or an Opteron, depending on which you can find cheaper.

Hmmm, so the 4400+ and the 170 are pretty close in the runnings then.

As I said before, is the 170 a Dual Core Opteron or is it / does it come in a single core CPU ?

If the 170 is Dual Core only then I`ll get that as I found one for under £300 [ saving £50 on the 4400+ ].

The 170 is a dual core with a 10X multiplier.

Right thats cool, but before I go spend my hard earned dosh on this CPU [ which for all purposes, appears to be a rebranded X2 4400+, are you positive that the ALL Opteron 170's are Dual core? Not insulting your intellgence here, just seems odd that this CPU is more than £50 cheaper on one website than it is on another:

Yes, it's a dual core, but it's not the same as a 4400+ exactly because the 4400+ gives you an 11X multiplier. (which i don't think you need)

Hmmm, but for £50+ less, I`m not really going to complain about having a slightly lower multiplier.

I think my 3700+ has a 10x multi anyway so meh. I'm really just looking to get a Dual Core and had around £350 to spend on a CPU.

So you reckon the 170 is better bang for buck ? Thats the impression I am getting to be honest from what I have been reading and told.
