Hard lock in games

Thread Starter
Hi guys, got a problem maybe you can help me with.

My pc keeps locking ep when playing games, sometimes it will lock within 15 minutes, other times I can play for a couple of hours until it locks. I have to restart after the lock ups as I cant get out of the game into windows. GPU temps can hit 80 degrees, but that shouldn't cause lock ups, should it? I'm getting a can of air to blowout my graphics card today so hopefully that will help, but do you guys have any other ideas of what it could be?

Edit: Also, when it freezes it doesn't go black or gray or anything, just a frozen shot of what was in the game, and the last sound being repeated, sort of like a r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r noise..

What game/games does it happen in? Could be overheating, could be a power supply issue. Possibly even a RAM issue. Only way to find out is troubleshoot.

Back when I used to play CoD4 there was a PB update that caused the game to crash once my GPU hit 65c. Updating PB fixed it. 80c seems pretty hot. Turn your gpu fan up?

Could you elaborate what you mean by locking up? Does the game just freeze?(Audio/Video everything freezes at a single frame/audio.) Still though, whats the game. May be a driver issue...

I usually play CoD4 and HoN, and it happens in both, the GPU rarely hits 80 and my fan is at 60%.

Yeah, it just freezes, and I've tried a few different drivers with no luck.

Have you tested the RAM? What kind of PSU do you have?

Edit: Oh, and update PB. Just in case.

It's one made by FSP group, I did some googling and apparently they actually make really high quality PSU's for OEM's. The pc is prebuilt by the way, so I would hope the PSU would be suitable, By test the ram would that be by running memtest?

That is correct about memtest. What model PC do you have? (Dell, XPS-000 or w.e) Did you install the graphics card after you bought it?

If Yes, how many watts is the power supply?

If no, how long have you had the computer?

Make sure you update PB.

It's an Acer Aspire M7300, and the GPU came with the PC. PB is updated, and I have had the computer since last November, it was running in the shop before that I think as I got it cheap for ex demo.

I ran into the same type of freezing you are referring to. After some troubleshooting it turns out I needed to underclock my ram to solve the freezing. Going from 1600mhz to 1333mhz with tighter timings (recommended by my ram's manufacturer) solved all my freezing for good. Not saying its for sure your problem but it's a possibility. I used a (free) program called OCCT (with large data set) to expose my ram issues.

So is OCCT a stress test? And what should I do with it?

Yes its a stress test. Once you're in, for test mode choose "large data set" and run it for an hour. Mine initially froze instantly or within 5 minutes, it exposed my ram right away. You might want to run it for an hour or three though
