Is there a stability test for a home network?

Thread Starter
Good morning,

I recently finished the March Foldathon and I kept losing my network connection between my Adaptor and my router. Needless to say, I lost a few WUs in the process.

Adaptor = N1 Wireless USB Adaptor
http://www.belkin.com/au/IWCatProduc...duct_Id=299126

Router= N1 ADSL2+ Wireless Modem Router
http://www.belkin.com/au/IWCatProduc...duct_Id=365203

Please refrain from comments around Belkin - this is the first issue that Ive had with it in over a year.

The signal was/is at 100% and there where no power outages. There where no PC resets or any of the usual suspects.

So I can stress test my CPU, GPU, RAM and even my PSU... is there a program to test the stability of my network?

Any suggestions to this and my issue are welcome. I would like my setup to be a stable as possible for the next Foldathon and general use

Thanks
Long Fang

Ping, probably. I don't know if Windows can natively, but in Linux you can set the interval and the size of the pings pretty easily. Set the interval to something low (like 0.05s/ping or 20 pings/s) and with a decently high size, like 16k (16384 bytes)

In Linux I'd write:
Code:
ping -s16384 -i0.05 blah

Thanks gonX. Im still relatively noobish when it comes to networks.

So, you are suggesting that my ping between my adaptor and router may be too long and I need to shorten the interval bewteen their communications to keep the connection alive?

If you have the option for FTP sites or a sight that you and up load and download also. try uploading large files to a FTP site or Google docs. Also a lot of internet companies will have internet speed detection that will download and upload a variety of different files sizes to see what your internet connection really is.

Edit: Wont the WU try to resend if it has a failure to send?

Thanks Magus. Ive try things like Speednet and apart from mt crappy ISP speed, everything is good. Its not the internet connection Im having probs with, its the connection between my adaptor and router.

Yes, the WU tries to send but if I have to manually reset the PC to re-establish the connection, 9 times out of 10, I loose the WU - even if I "pause" the WU and I cant pause the CPU client. Nothing like loosing a WU you have been folding for 6 hours....

No I just want you to have a ping running in the background as much as possible. That's the best way using native tools to stability test your network, as far as I know.
Ping basically sends a message to the target computer, by default in 1 second intervals and with a small packages of something like 32 + ipv4 headers (22 bytes?) on Windows - that's what you want to change to something bigger and a lot more frequent, otherwise it's not really going to stability test your network.

try this:

ping 192.168.1.1 (router ip) -n 100 -l 65500

just tried it with mine - i had 3 timeouts in the first 50 pings

-n = amount to ping
-l = size (65500 = max)
-w = wait time = frequency ???

Ohhh... see, I told you I was nooby at this stuff

Thanks guys. Im a work ATM so Ill try that when I get home <virtual reps to mods>

So, If I get a heap of time outs... does that mean its not stable? And what can be done?
