i7-930 OC or i7-980x - Page 5

The chimp challenge is coming up, think of the ppd that a 980X would add to the mix. Warranty sucks, but i say keep the 980X and fold the hell out of it. That would be the best way to utilize that beast and you could still game at the same time!

i feel that each year tech depreciates about 20% depending on a number of things but generally 20%. i would take a hit on 20% of $200 not $1000.

but its 100% up to you if ur willing to spend that much.

the only difference im seeing is the AES New Instructions and bigger cashe.
and u can always overclock so speed isnt much of an issue.

6 cores? 12 threads? are games using 4 cores yet?

+1
You are not encoding/folding/etc.
You have no need for anything more than an i7-930, that will even be over kill at around 4 Ghz.

920/930 (whichever you find cheapest.) Buy a 5970 if your interested in gaming only.
980X if you have the cash but really 920/930 is really all you need. With the extra cost of the 980 you could get yourself a nice setup with 920/930 and get near-equal performance OC'd.

BTW you should look at a cooler other than the Zalman just food for thought.

Ok build is done! You can see the final spec's in my sig below. I did not go with the 980x only b/c currently the only one I could get my hands on was a 30 day warranty OEM. I couldn't bring myself to keep that, so returned and got a 930. As you can see it is OC'd to 4.0 Ghz and is very stable! I will most likely be posting elsewhere to tweak this OC and see how much farther I can push it (especially the memory)!!

Thank everyone for all your help y'all rock!

In response to the last two: I did get a 5870 at one point but returned it. I prefer to pay $100 more and deal with heat issues to stick with Nvidia, just my deal (comparing the 5870 to 480 )

I listened and got rid of the zalaman! Running an h50 with a push/pull setup. Running at about 43c idle and 78c load on this OC. This is without much tweaking on the voltage yet, so I believe I can bring the temps down even further with some toying around.
