Hi,

got my new hardware AMD 64 X2 3800+, Gigabyte K8N Pro-SLI, eVGA 7800GT, and 2x512MB PQI RAM.

My RAM seems to run stabil at (I do not know if this is good or bad for oc pros and I did not play with higher voltages) ...
2.5-3-2-8@220Mhz with CPU at 2400Mhz (RAM ratio 2/1.83 = 366), or
3.0-3-3-8@240Mhz with CPU at 2400Mhz (RAM ratio 2/2 = 400).

Q1: So I guess it is better to have a highe RAM freuqency (@240 in my case) than to have more agressive RAM timings but at lower speed (@220), right?
Q1b: Beside, I do not think that the "asynchronous" factor would make it worse?

Q2: In general, I run a "regular" partition for work and all other things, and a seperate very clean partition for games. Shall I consider any difference in oc-ing the two differnet partitons, or keep it the same. Btw, I do not need the last possible fps for gmaing or the max score at any mathematical benchmark test on my regular partition, I just want not to "waste" easy oc potential for my hardware without risking stability.

The second one because your RAM is running faster, also that second one is a 1:1 ratio.

If I'm not mistaken, A64's don't care for memory bandwidth that much since the memory controller is on the CPU itself. In all my overclocking experiences with A64's I have had better results with low memory timmings.

And thus begins the battle.

YOu'll get different answers so it's best to try some benchmarks and see which one does better in the area you care about the most.
For example the higher mhz could net you better game performance but you could take a hit in photoshop (Just an example btw).

I personally have accepted the fact that DDR1 is at the end of it's life and I'll take the tight timings over the mhz.

When build my next computer it will obviously have DD2 and then I'll worry about overall mhz cause the worry about timings will be pretty much moot at that point.

Let’s break it down for you script_kiddies
The cas Latency is like a 555 timing IC it times all of your operations and shifts data around mostly binary text; LOWER CAS LATENCY = programs opening faster and better run time on games; Also smaller time you have to wait
On the other hand the operating frequency of the ram lets say 400 MHz
This is like talking to your cpu(central-processing-unit) higher frequency=your cpu will be happy cause of compatibility compared to 200mhz

Personally I would go with the lower CAS LATENCY timing is everything don’t worry about operating frequency but that’s my opinion you need to decide

Yes its been tested on review sites, dfi forums etc

LOWER TIMINGS not running a 1:1 ratio will win most of the time. Unless its like 200mhz@2-2-2-5 vs. 300mhz 2.5-3-3-5 . Or something of huge proportions.

Amd's rely on overall CPU clock more, so keep the timings as low as you can. Always stay away from cas3 on amd's.
