Best Linux for SLOW pc?

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I was wondering what might be the best OS to install on a really old / slow pc.

It's a 933mhz pentium III with 128mb RAM. This dinosaur belongs to my dad, and he's too cheap to buy anything newer. It's currently running Windows ME and for whatever reason, comcast high speed will not work on it.

However, it works fine at my place on time warner. Comcast support claims Windows ME is the problem. Also of note, my XP laptop works on internet fine at his house.

The machine will pretty much be used for light internet browsing only. So I'm looking for the fastest / easiest Linux I can find. Simpler is better. I tried booting off ubuntu and xubuntu CDs but neither will load (probably not enough memory).

About to try puppy linux now, but I'm open to suggestions!

Xubuntu is a derivative of Ubuntu but designed for lower specification computers. It can run the live cd with 192MB of ram. It can boot on 128MB. However, it recommends 256MB of ram to run. There is an alternate version that requires 64MB of ram to install.

I'd recommend AntiX distro.

I like Puppy. I don't mind it's minimalist desktop at all and it is FAST. I inherited a truly ancient laptop, a Sony Vaio running a P II 533 w/ 128M ram and it is entirely adequate for typical email and surf work.... even handles YouTube OK, that is, with Puppy. I'm afraid XP is a bit of a slug on it. It also runs ZipSlack even faster but that requires some prep first. If you're new to deeper Linux. I vote Puppy.

I'd say try something LXDE based, fluxbox is a bit... foreign, to most.

LXDE can run on very low amounts of RAM, but I'd avoid openoffice, firefox, and other apps that are known for using a bit of memory (alternatives like abiword, and epiphany do the job just as well, use up less memory).

I'd say build up exactly what you want with Arch. It may seem a lot of work to begin with, but it's well documented, only needs to be done once, and only exactly what you need and want is installed. Perfect for stuff like this.
