4800+ x2 OVERCLOCK

Thread Starter
hey guys, i have read a few threads on overclocking dual cores but i dont think there are any on the 4800+. so i think its time i overclocked mine and showed some step by step picures etc etc. but i dont think i can do it without your help!

but unfortunatly i will need to spend more money and purchase some new ram, which i hope to order 2 nite

would u agree that the best ram i can purchase to give me the ability to overclock nicely would be the G.Skill 2GB DDR HZ PC4000 (2x1GB)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/G_Skill.html

if you can have alook at the selection from this link can u advice me on the best ram, i have been told the g-skill is good but would like to hear your opinions too

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal..._Memory_8.html

hope to hear from you guys soon

I went for the ZX as it can do 2-3-2-5 timings @ 200Mhz and can normally do around 250Mhz 3-4-4-8. For the apps that I run though Eg. Games and 3DMark the tighter timings outperformed the increased speed.
Plus, the ZX will probably do 1.5-3-2-5 if your motherboard supports this.

When you say increase your overclock do you mean your CPU speed? Ram has very little effect on the CPU speed as you can just use a divider other than 1:1. This allows you to reduce your ram speed whilst continuing to raise the HTT and CPU speed further.

You probably read it correctly. A lot of people don't really understand dividers and the effect of Ram on CPU speed. Ram should never restrict a CPU o/c unless using old systems that don't have this option.

All those G Skill ram are very well priced and perform pretty well. The apps that you use would normally benefit more from tight timings as opposed to high bandwidth so the ZX would be my suggestion.

It depends on the application really and the system. Intel systems have a high clock speed and can utilise the increased bandwidth better than the more efficient AMD which has a lower clock speed for the same output. Because of this, the AMD tends to benefit more from the tighter timings compared to the increased Mhz.

There are exceptions to this of course. SuperPi runs tend to be faster with increased bandwidth and so do apps that transfer large files or have a lot of data transfer Eg. databases.

Plus, you've go to get a balance right. Ram running at 300Mhz 3-4-4-8 for example would outperform 200Mhz 2-2-2-5 at most apps, but ram that can do this sort of speed would cost much more.

You can find out how far your CPU will go and then just alter your ram settings when you get the new sticks. Just make sure your CPU temp doesn't go above 60°C and try to keep around 50°C if possible.
