ICH10R question capable of Raid 10?

The following will be used mostly for gaming (85%) and some applications (photoshop, 3ds max, etc.) (15%)

I am thinking of taking 4 x Velociraptors (74gb model) into Raid 10. I have my sig rig's controller, the ICH10R...

Will this be manageable or will it struggle?

I'm sure it can handle Raid 0 but wanted to check into Raid 10... I won't have to worry about a drive dying and taking the array down

Yes it will work just fine. I think raid 5 may be a better option though.

So 3 drives in Raid 5 makes more sense? I haven't read it all yet (still at work) but the deal has to conclude soon. Thanks for the quick replies! OCN is awesome with that.

RAID-5 write speeds are not as good. Since you're working with a mix of applications, I suggest RAID-10. RAID-5 on HostRAID is not really a good choice anyways. Dedicated RAID card with an XOR engine for parity calculations would be a better choice for RAID-5.

I wouldn't expect anything too spectacular though, since those 74GB Raptors aren't spectacularly quick either. Not saying don't do it - just advising you to be careful of what to expect in terms of performance.

If you don't already have the drives though, I wouldn't suggest you spend money to buy them....

Ok but if we ignore the other apps and focus entirely on gaming? (OS and some oft-used apps will be on a new SSD Intel X25-V 40gb)

Also: My current speeds are so bad that I'm sure Ill be pleased with the raptors. My gaming drive right now:

Did they even make a 74GB Velociraptor? I know they mde 80GB short-stroked drives, but I thought the base model V-Raptor was 150GB.

I wouldn't mess about with Raptors nowadays - they are pretty poor performers when tipped against more modern drives. Unless you get given them they won't be worth using IMO, and definately not worth spending any money on that setup.

They made 75gb and 150 gb at some point. I already spent the money so I'll set it up and if the setup sucks I'll just resell them.

The drives were the second VRs to come out, and they are SATA I drives. They are extremely dated now, so I hope you already have these and aren't planning on buying them, because a good current drive would be better, but if you already have the drives and it wont cost you anything, then I guess its worth trying out.

I bought them already but all 3 for $110. I thought 3 of these in raid 0 or 5 would be worth it. Doesn't seem like it based on the responses
