Long, slow and cheap - Page 3

Thread Starter
Thought I had it last night after an hour of prime, but it crashed after I went to sleep. She was at just over 3.8.

I'm an hour into prime now on my 1:2.66 divider at 3750, say a little prayer to the overclock gods for me.

Thought I read something called 'linpack' was faster at testing system stability...can anyone confirm it works in 7(x64) for me please?

Does anyone think it's a bad idea to go over 1.5vcore on a mobo with only a 4 pin cpu power plug? It wouldn't have to be for 24/7...my bios has 4 profiles I can save.

Thanks for your help.

i don't think it would hurt the mobo per se, but watch your temps on the proc cores for sure and if it starts to climb too high just shut her down and drop the vcore down a bit

Ah cheers, good to know.

One thing I'm not sure about is I have never been able to monitor my individual core temps with this cpu/mobo combo, are you saying you can?

I've tried 3 programs and all 3 and the bios just show a generic 'core temp'...at least they are all pretty close together.

With this massive heat pipe cooler thing, I idle at about 34c and load at around 46c...highest I've been so far was 51c, I'd like to stay under 55.

I have an old k62 cpu fan strapped to my NB heatsink (which for now is also my gpu), but right now it's ice cold at auto voltage and 2500 like you recommended.

Thanks for stopping by my budget build buddy.

this is a screenie of my monitoring prog that works with mine, it shows both cores as well as a plethora of other stuff. Just google for HWMonitor or visit cpuz downloads (I believe it is) to try it out.

(note that the high temp you'll see in there is a known anomaly and may also show up in yours, it is believed to be the onboard Nvidia GPU although I have no solid confirmation of that as yet)

Oh yeah, your heatpipe thing, throw a 120mm fan on one side of that to bring the temps down a bit, you're still well within safe ranges but mine is with a stock opteron heatpipe cooler and always at 100%, never goes over what you stated your idle is.

Ah ok...HWmonitor shows 0's for each individual core, but the 'core temp' it shows matches speedfan and my bios. I uninstalled HWmonitor, but next time I restart, I'll try it again.

I got the one wild temp reading too, although I get a separate reading for my onboard gpu so I don't think they are related. I read on MSI's forum it's just a glitch and to ignore it.

Here's a screenshot of speedfan, I'm loaded up.

I think my idle could be better I agree, I will redo my TIM before I get close to 50c again, I think I messed that up.

I know the stock tuniq fan is lame, it'd be fun to put a delta in there but I'll probably go with something much quieter, any suggestions?

I overclocked my onboard too , and for anyone that is curious, it barely gets 20 fps in MW2 and BC2 kicks it's but bad at like 6 fps. One day it will make a nice 'entertainment system pc' with the hdmi onboard though.

Thanks again for your help brother, and have a great weekend.

Yeah if you can find a way to mount a fan to that passive sink of yours I'd suggest a scythe gentle typhoon I think it is, great CFM and static pressure to a relatively quiet fan, cheers and you have a good weekend as well.

Ahh...ok...I'm pretty sure I saw something like 0 or 16c in that spot for the individual temps. I'll reinstall it and try again. Nice #'s on that vc card of yours, there is one down the street for $80....not the best deal but I'm thinking hard about it.

On a side note just BSOD'd with memory dump.

I would have been amazed if that held anyway, vcore was low, bumped it up one more notch. Think I'm at 1.485 now but cpu-z shows 1.475.

Here we go again.

/sigh ... yeah 16c does seem awful low so that must be a glitch, I wonder if there's any way to do a dump of that to cpu-z or whoever makes it and they can look into a fix?

Yeah that card's been a gem for me for a long while now, woulda loved a couple more to try a 3-way SLI on my mobo, but I can't find my exact ones anymore
