Big Typhoon Experiment

I'm going to commandeer bmy bro's computer for a few days and do some experimentation with his BT. I'm going to try modifications to the unit that may increase performace. Namely, i will affix ramsinks to the HSF base, and bracket, thereby increasing surface area on the base. Seeing that the ThermalRight XP-120 has a slight temp advantage over the SI-120, it would be safe to assume that the fins on the base of the HSF were the deciding factor. I will be using ThermalTake copper RAMsinks to accomplish this goal. I will also use AS5 on the bracket to increase thermal transfer from the HSF base and the bracket. As soon as i accomplish these tests (if they have a positive impace), i will submit the worklog as a FAQ, and if it doesn;t get pushed through as a FAQ i will still post on the board. :-D Reguardless, you guys will be the first to know the results....

I affixed ram sinks to the part of the BT that connects directly to the proc, thus affording immediate heat dissipation. And my hypothesis was found to be correct. If you cause immediate heat dissipation, the processor load temperatures will decrease dramatically.

Before adding the ramsinks to the HSF, my brother's computer ran a stable 2.66 @ 1.5v @ 34C idle and 50C load. Now mind you, the AS5 had already cured in his system when these measurements were taken.

After application of the ramsinks onto the HSF base, the temperature at load is 43C. That is a 7C drop in temperature. And this was for a measly 10 bucks. I used copper RAMsinks that i bought from compusa, but you can get them at online retailers for a smaller amount of money. I am sure that if i had used a REAL thermal adhesive such as Arctic Alumina, that i would have gotten even lower temperatures. But that's what i got. I'll write a FAQ if anyone is interested....or i may just because i want to.

ok, but you need to test these results after the as5 has cured... and do it multiple times and preferably to multiple cpu's to prove that it actually works, how do u know that when he applied the as5 before that he did it correctly, and maybe u did it right and that is where your results are coming from.... ya know?

You might also want to try attaching a small fan to those heatsinks!

That's what i did, but the camera really sucks. I think i got it for 50 at wal-mart, and i know that the AS5 was applied correctly because i built the system for him and i do all the maintainance for him.....i'm his big brother and it was a christmas gift. But yeah, i did think about attatching a Blue Ice 2 to the heatsinks just for kicks and grins....as well as to see if it would help any....maybe after i get my next check.....
