What is my real Speed

Thread Starter
It look like I got my first stable overclock with my I7-920. I simply changed the multiplier form 133 to 160 and the memory frequency to 2:10. I didn't need to adjust voltage at all!

Both CPU-Z and the Evha E-Leet tuning utility report 3351.5 mhz, however, cpuinfo by visualware.com reports 3191.5 mhz.

Also, I had changed the memory frequency to try and maintain 1600 mgz for my Corsair Dominator Ram (6 gig 3x2) however cpu-z reports this for the slots:

Max bandwidth PC3-10700H (667 MHz)

Is this correct - How else can I verify memory settings.

It it dangerous to overclock my Ram if I have to?

Thanks

Whatever CPU-Z states is what your frequency is. Also, there is a memory tab that is on CPU-Z so you can check your memory settings.

You should run your memory at it's rated speeds from the factory first before overclocking it.

I spoke a little too soon as I jsut blue screened:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name:BlueScreen
OS Version:6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID:1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode:124
BCP1:0000000000000000
BCP2:FFFFFA8007257028
BCP3:00000000FA000000
BCP4:0000000000400405
OS Version:6_1_7600
Service Pack:0_0
Product:256_1

I don't suppose the error codes help. I booted up in non overclocked mode. I'll increase voltage a little with the overclock profile.

With stock speed cpu-z reportz dram frequency 796.0 mhz fsb:dram 2:12

The bios clearly has a target frequency of 1600 MHZ. What is wrong with this stock setup?

Thanks

BCCode: 124
This means you need more vcore.

The 796mhz you're seeing in CPU-Z is doubled to get your actual memory speed, so yours is running at 1592mhz.

Thanks for the info.

I increased vcore an additional 0.2500 and blue screened with the same code. I'll keep increasing in minimum steps until this dosent blue screen with this same code.

btw add your system specs, its in the quicklink, and im gonna sudjest about 0.5, you will get 160 with it easy then u can even push it a little higher, i would guess around 165

no its not dangerous to oc your ram.... aslong as its stable and you dont mess with your ram voltages

I think you mean 0.025 steps. Since your Vcore range is probably in the 1.1-1.4v ballpark.

System Specs - I am not doing the the way that everybody else is. How do I do this?
I7-920 6 (3x2) Corsair Dominator 1600 MHZ Ram

EVGA X58 3x SLI Motherboard

I got the decimals wrong in my reported steps. It looks like the default (auto) vcore for my system was 1.275. With the next step I have so far increased 0.03125v to 1.30625v. I'll see If I can blue screen this setup.

visualware.com reports 3191.5 because its not taking into acount the 1x multiplier from turbo.

now about error 124 it usualy means vtt/qpi voltages sometimes you will need to increase it or lower it. if you have to much qpi voltage it will cause instability. this coule be masked by raising the vcore but in fact you can lower vcore and qpi in some cases and gain stability. for eror 124 do not rais vcore. fight with the vtt and qpi voltages first..
