In overall power draw yes the 470 uses the most, but when it comes to PPD/Watt the 470 is on top. That is the nice thing about nvidia GPUs so far, regardless of increased power draw, the performance also increases. The only GPU that doesnt fit in that way is the 9600GT due to the lack of shaders.

For every watt you use the 470 produces around 44PPD. The next best card I have tested, the GTX275, only gets 37PPD/Watt.

Those wattages are surprisingly low. Two 8800GTS's only pull ~300 watts at the wall? Assuming 80% efficiency, that's only 240 watts of actual draw. If that's the case, I could very well run a second one on my current PSU.

Am I missing something here?

Yeah with my dual core setup it only draws 308W at the wall on average. I did see spikes up to 325W with certain WUs, but others were only 295-300W. I was only running the GPUs and not SMP though.

I think a lot of people grossly overestimate how much power their folding rigs really need. Which is the point of this guide.

I ran 3 GTSs on my Corsair 550, so you can definitely run two on your 400.

I'd just like to bump this thread and give a thumbs up to the validity of the OP's unexpected results. So many people throw out such large power consumption numbers for maybe of the rigs here, yet they just aren't true. This thread prompted me to go out and buy a wattage meter, and the meter confirmed the OP's results.

While I was expecting the PSU in my sig rig to be nearly maxed out, it actually has quite a bit of power to burn. With both GPU's and the SMP going full blast, at full OC's, I'm only pulling 288 watts at the wall. With an 80% efficiency factor, that's a piddle 230 watts. Now I know I don't have to worry about getting a second 8800.

Just came across this info as I am looking to replace my two 9800GX2's to get some more PPD out of my machine. Looking at running costs and PPD.

Here is what I got from my readings.Sorry didn't take note of the WU Types at the time of recording this info. Hope it will help.

I have a OCZ 600W and a Thermaltake Express 250W
System spec
CPU Q6600
6GB memory
640GBHD
DVD Drive

Folding@home on all four GPU's draws 540W-562W

So my figures are similar to yours.

Not sure if I should replace my 9800GX2 cards with

2x GTX460 (should be cheaper to run give approx the same PPD)
2x GTX 470 (Should bing in 23K-26K)
1x GTX480 and GTX460 (should bring in 25-30K)
3x GTX460 (should bring in approx 27-30K)

But need to take the running costs into account because running 24*7 doesn't come cheap.

If you are looking to have a slightly lower power bill and not lose any PPD look at either the GTX 460 or 465. I havent tested the 460s yet, but the 465s offer better PPD/Watt than even a 470.

One important thing to note about the Fermis
. When you adjust the voltage you generally lose efficiency. I have noticed on both the 465 and 470 that the extra OC and PPD do not scale well with the extra wattage.

I plan on continuing my testing in a couple more months, so keep an eye out for updates.

Note: For this measurement I took the PPD from a 353WU and divided it by the wattage for the same WU. The 353WU has been in use since I started folding and doesnt seem to favor older or newer GPUs. Again this is only intended as a reference.

I hope this information will help folders make smarter choices when looking for their next folding GPU.

He used all 353 point WU's which is about as accurate as you can get it.
